Xiaomi (HKEX: 1810) shares slumped in Hong Kong on Friday, a day after the company formally introduced its Sky Nomad product series and debuted two range-extended sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Join us on Telegram or Google News The company opened pre-sales for the two range-extended SUVs at a technology launch event on Thursday. The flagship 7-seat N90 Max is priced at 299,900 yuan ($44,170) in pre-sales, while the 5-seat N70 Max is at 259,900 yuan. That pricing sits well below the 339,000 yuan that Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) six-seat Model Y L sells for in China, and close to the 249,800 yuan for Li Auto's (NASDAQ: LI) new Li L6. A Deutsche Bank team led by analyst Wang Bin called the pricing aggressive, attributing it to Xiaomi's volume pressure. The company targets 550,000 deliveries in 2026 but managed only 185,055 units in the first half. That means it needs to deliver an average of about 61,000 units per month in the second half, far above current levels, the team noted in a research note on Thursday. Xiaomi's new orders in the last four weeks of July were a tepid 5,400, 5,600, 7,400 and 5,700 units respectively, according to Thinkercar data cited by the team. Xiaomi EV monthly deliveries 2024 2025 2026 The Sky Nomad series targets the 200,000-300,000 yuan price band, putting it up against mid-end SUVs from BYD (HKEX: 1211), Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863), Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175), Lynk & Co, Chery (HKEX: 9973) and Volkswagen, Deutsche Bank said. The series could also weigh on premium offerings from Li Auto, Tesla, Zeekr and Aito. Xiaomi is reportedly using lower-cost batteries from Sunwoda (SZSE: 300207) and CALB (HKEX: 3931) for the Sky Nomad, instead of the CATL (HKEX: 3750) and BYD cells used in its all-electric models. That cost structure could support the aggressive pricing, Deutsche Bank said. The Sky Nomad is built on the new Kunlun architecture and is Xiaomi's second product series after the SU7 and YU7, as well as its first move into the range-extender market. The N90 Max carries a 76 kWh battery, offering 464 km of CLTC pure-electric range and 1,705 km of combined range. The N70 Max offers up to 505 km of pure-electric range. Both models are set to formally launch in September, with Pro and standard versions to follow, Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun said at Thursday's event. The segment has come under pressure recently, however. Retail sales of range-extended vehicles in China were 450,000 units in the first half, down 15.09% year-on-year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Lei published an article earlier this week responding to questions over the timing of the entry, saying the range-extender market is far from saturated and holds plenty of promise.
