# The Great Fragmentation: What drones, dialysis, and a struggling automaker tell us about 2026

When you look at a seemingly random basket of companies in the summer of 2026, you do not see a single unified trend. Instead, you see a profound fragmentation. From a drone manufacturer setting up shop in Texas to a German automaker fighting a losing battle in China, the lines dividing winners and losers are being drawn in real time.

I am told that across boardrooms, the conversation has shifted entirely away from post-pandemic stabilization and toward aggressive technological integration and geographical realignment. This matters because the traditional boundaries between sectors are blurring faster than ever.

Consider **AgEagle Aerial Systems (UAVS.US)**. The company has faced its share of headwinds, including a recent non-compliance notice from the exchange. And yet, it is pushing forward with domestic manufacturing, recently launching its RedEdge-MX sensor production in Texas to meet NDAA compliance. In today's geopolitical climate, localized tech is a survival mechanism.

On the other side of the world, legacy giants are learning how brutal the new landscape can be. **Volkswagen (VWAGY.US)** recently reported an 8.6% drop in second-quarter group sales, with its China business plummeting by over a third. The protests outside Volkswagen's Zwickau plant by hundreds of workers highlight the human cost of these transitions. The board calls it a fundamental restructuring, but when your core market evaporates, the shockwaves are felt across the entire manufacturing floor. Its stock has been under severe pressure this year.

This is what happens when you miss the macro shift. The truth, as usual, is more complicated, but the market is clearly rewarding those who attach themselves to the right tailwinds.

Take **IMAX Corp (IMAX.US)**, for instance. The company saw its shares surge recently following a strong Q2 report, bringing in **USD 103 million** in revenue, a 12% year-over-year increase. But they aren't just selling movie tickets; they are partnering with Goer Dynamics to build the first IMAX in-car entertainment system. They are redefining what a screen company actually is.

Similarly, **Manulife Financial (MFC.US)** isn't just an insurance and wealth management firm anymore—it is becoming an AI-driven enterprise. For Manulife, the adoption of Microsoft 365 E7 Frontier and Copilot for 30,000 employees is not just an IT upgrade; it is a fundamental rewiring of how a financial institution processes risk and customer data. It is the kind of aggressive move that justifies their **USD 1.8 billion** in Q1 core earnings and recent 52-week stock highs.

**Willis Towers Watson (WTW.US)** is reading from the same playbook, recently topping estimates with **USD 2.47 billion** in Q2 revenue while launching its new RiskAgility financial modeling platform. Tech integration is the new baseline for professional services.

But there is a catch: not every company has a clean AI or tech narrative to fall back on. **Mercer International (MERC.US)** is navigating a tough environment, posting a **USD 52 million** net loss in Q1, though its largest shareholder group has aggressively increased its stake to over 40.25%. Packaging giant **Amcor (AMCR.US)** is expanding its flexible packaging plants in China despite the tough economic backdrop, proving that physical goods still require physical supply chains.

Meanwhile, **DaVita (DVA.US)** is leaning into corporate responsibility, rolling out ambitious 2030 ESG and community care goals, and **Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust (WHLR.US)** is quietly managing its commercial properties amidst a broader real estate chill.

And then there are the bold bets. **High Roller Technologies (ROLR.US)** was just added to the Russell Microcap Index and is securing brokerage licenses to launch an event-based prediction market.

My view is that the market in 2026 has no patience for companies caught in the middle. You are either aggressively streamlining and integrating the next wave of technology, or you are getting crushed by shifting global dynamics. For those clinging to the old way of doing business? Good luck with that.
