# AMD enters the earnings season with two strong engines

AMD has been buoyed by strong demand for servers. Now, analysts are looking forward to the volume prospects of its brand new rack-level solutions.

Advanced Micro Devices' recent momentum in the server chip sector means that investors will have a keen interest in two major business areas when the company reports its second-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland stated in a report to clients that the demand environment for AMD's EPYC server central processing units (CPUs) "remains strong," noting that the company recently raised its total addressable market estimate to $220 billion by 2030.

Rolland indicated that AMD's second-quarter earnings are likely to exceed expectations, thanks to its data center business (including CPUs and graphics processors).

According to estimates compiled by FactSet, AMD is expected to report total revenue of $11.3 billion for the quarter ending in June. Its data center business is expected to see a year-over-year revenue increase of 101% to $6.5 billion, with server chips contributing $4 billion and AI-related contributions accounting for $2.5 billion.

Analysts tracked by FactSet also expect adjusted earnings per share of $1.62, representing a year-over-year increase of 237%, despite the impact of export controls to China in the same period last year—AMD has stated that these restrictions led to inventory and related costs.

Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland noted that the rise of generative AI has led to a surge in demand for server chips that run these applications, with the ratio of CPUs to graphics processors reaching 1:1 in some cases.

Jefferies analyst Brian Curtis stated that AMD's recently released Venice series server CPUs provide upside potential for the second half of the year. He pointed out that these chips could see "substantial price increases," with average selling prices potentially reaching the range of $3,000 to $5,000, compared to about $1,500 in the first quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, Curtis mentioned that "there is ample upside around the upcoming AI ramp," referring to AMD's launch of its first rack-level solution, Helios. This system will be deployed with AMD's next-generation MI450 series GPUs, with customers including OpenAI and Meta Platforms (META).

AMD CEO Lisa Su stated at the Advancing AI event in July that shipments of Helios are scheduled to begin by the end of the third quarter. Investors will be looking for more related comments during AMD's earnings conference call.

Curtis added that the chipmaker has also reached agreements with Microsoft (MSFT) and Anthropic regarding Helios, indicating that adoption rates are increasing. He noted that AMD could benefit from this deployment in the current quarter, but a significant portion of revenue ramp-up is expected to occur in the fourth quarter into next year According to data from FactSet, analysts expect third-quarter revenue to be $12.5 billion. The market generally anticipates an adjusted earnings per share of $1.89 for the quarter
