Students starting their studies later this year will be the final cohort of “Oxbridge” undergraduates covered by the programme, according to the website of the Jardine Foundation, the company’s education trust. In a reply to the South China Morning Post on Tuesday, Jardine Matheson said it was increasing its “focus and commitment” on the Asian market and that the decision was made to support the region. “This change is purely driven by being able to maximise impact for the greatest number of students,” it said. “As with all organisations, Jardine Foundation regularly reviews its approach to assess whether its programmes and initiatives are fulfilling its objectives as effectively as possible.” The company added that the foundation was focused on making the best possible impact in the communities where its businesses operated. The move marks the end of an undergraduate scholarship programme that has operated for 44 years. “Following a strategic review, the foundation will be increasing its focus and investment in Asia, expanding opportunities for local students to study at leading universities in the region,” it said. The foundation added that it would continue to support current Jardine scholars at the two British universities and the 2026 awardees, as well as its existing Oxford and Cambridge postgraduate scholarship programmes. Ethan Chan Si-yan, who won a scholarship in 2020, said he fully understood the company’s decision, but described the change as a “pity”. “It not only offers the recipients a chance to receive an education that could change their lives, but also builds a strong community of Jardine scholars,” he said, adding that awardees had contributed to society in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Asia. Chan, from a humble background in Yuen Long, was studying at Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School when he received the scholarship. After finishing his studies at Cambridge, he joined a charity called Access Abroad Hong Kong, which offers a free mentorship programme for local candidates who want to apply for various scholarships to study abroad.
