# Anthropic Splashes Out Another $10 Billion to Secure Compute Power, NVIDIA-Backed Newcomer Takes Order

Anthropic is accelerating the expansion of its compute reserves, this time partnering with a cloud computing startup that was established only a few months ago.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that sources familiar with the matter revealed that **Anthropic has signed a $10 billion compute power procurement agreement with Volta Infra Holdings Ltd., a cloud infrastructure startup backed by NVIDIA, with a contract term of six years.** The agreement involves a data center located in Norway, managed by Volta and operated in partnership with Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies Group. Volta disclosed the deal earlier in the day but did not name the client; both Anthropic and Bitdeer declined to comment.

This is the latest step in Anthropic's recent series of compute power arrangements.

As demand for its Claude product continues to expand, Anthropic has successively reached compute agreements with SpaceX, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and Akamai Technologies Inc., and is reportedly in discussions with Meta Platforms Inc. to rent its data center compute capacity, according to Bloomberg. This transaction once again highlights the urgent demand for compute resources among AI developers, as well as the increasingly massive capital bets behind this infrastructure race.

## Norwegian Data Center: 133 Megawatt Capacity, Equipped with NVIDIA's Latest Chips

**According to Volta, the Norwegian data center involved in this collaboration has a compute capacity of 133 megawatts and will be equipped with NVIDIA's latest generation of Vera Rubin chips.** Ricard Boada, CEO of Volta, refused to disclose the client's name.

Volta was founded in January this year by former executives of Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. It specializes in AI compute leasing and assists clients in providing financing solutions for high-priced chip purchases. On the same day, the company announced the completion of $300 million in venture capital financing, reaching a valuation of $2.4 billion.

Volta's partner, Bitdeer, is a typical example of a Bitcoin mining company undergoing transformation.

As Bitcoin prices face pressure, more mining companies are beginning to shift part of their data center compute capacity from cryptocurrency mining to AI applications. In its monthly operational report on July 21, Bitdeer stated that it plans to complete the transformation of some of its crypto mining facilities in Texas, Tennessee, and Washington State.

## Financing and Listing: Anthropic's Capital Expansion Path

Behind the compute arms race is the continuously rising demand for funds.

Anthropic completed a $65 billion round of financing earlier this year, with the raised funds mainly used to cover the high costs of AI development. Meanwhile, the company is reportedly considering raising capital through a public listing, potentially listing on the public market as early as this year.

This $10 billion agreement with Volta reflects the high dependence of AI developers on external financing and compute suppliers. Both Anthropic and its competitor OpenAI rely on a mixed supply from large technology companies and emerging cloud computing startups to build the data center networks they deem necessary for the continuous evolution of AI systems and large-scale commercial deployment.

## Industry Concerns: Circular Transactions and Risk Transmission

This compute expansion is not without controversy.

Over the past year, several financing arrangements involving OpenAI and Anthropic have been criticized for their "circular nature"—the interdependent network formed between technology suppliers and AI developers is becoming increasingly complex. If AI demand fails to meet current high expectations, potential losses could be amplified.

OpenAI's ambitious scale is also evident: founder Sam Altman previously stated publicly that he expects the company to invest "trillions" of dollars in AI physical infrastructure.

OpenAI is currently planning a new data center in Georgia with a cost that could exceed $30 billion. According to Bloomberg, NVIDIA is also in discussions with OpenAI to assist it in renting a hyperscale compute hub led by SoftBank Group in Ohio, valued at $500 billion with an installed capacity of 10 gigawatts.
