# The Blind Spots: AI Patents, Resource Mergers, and the Margins of 2026

I'm told that institutional capital is quietly creeping into the market's blind spots—those overlooked corners that defy easy categorization. While everyone watches the usual mega-cap tech suspects, the real underlying story of the summer of 2026 is happening in a bizarre mix of IP battlegrounds, hard-asset miners, and housing finance giants. This matters because these fringe assets often provide the clearest micro-level view of where supply chain tensions and yield-hungry funds are actually shifting.

On the edges of the AI narrative, automotive voice software maker **Cerence (CRNC.US)** is shifting from passive supplier to aggressive defender. In May 2026, the company filed an ITC complaint against Amazon, alleging intellectual property infringement. Backed by strong Q2 FY26 revenues that topped estimates at **USD 64.2M**, their willingness to fight a giant signals a new phase of AI IP wars. Meanwhile, the physical infrastructure supporting this tech boom remains quietly lucrative. **Optical Cable Corporation (OCC.US)** rode a **26.6%** year-over-year jump in Q2 net sales to a spot in the Russell Microcap Index this July. And even closed-end funds are catching the hardware tailwind: **The Taiwan Fund (TWN.US)** recently rallied, driven by a massive **47.36%** NAV total return for the quarter ended in May, wildly outperforming its benchmark.

And yet, if you think this is purely a tech infrastructure story, you're missing the massive cash flow happening in the old economy. By late July 2026, **Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FMCC.US)** posted a staggering **61%** year-over-year surge in Q2 net income, hitting **USD 3.8B** on the back of lower credit losses. At the same time, the precious metals sector is undergoing a quiet consolidation. **Avino Silver & Gold Mines (ASM.US)** reported record Q1 2026 revenues up **109%**, while **Gold Resource Corporation (GORO.US)** successfully closed its business combination with Goldgroup Mining in July to expand its footprint.

The truth, as usual, is more complicated—especially when you look at how investors are chasing yield. Take the massive **USD 13.2B** **iShares Preferred and Income Securities ETF (PFF.US)**. To maintain its ~**5.5%** yield, the fund has notably shifted its risk profile, adding exposure to Bitcoin treasury perpetuals and AI-linked convertibles. Meanwhile, specialized vehicles like the **ProShares MSCI Europe ESG Leaders ETF (EUVX.US)** and the **First Trust India NIFTY 50 Equal Weight ETF (NFTY.US)** continue to absorb the long-tail flows of regional and ESG-driven rebalancing, far from the headline noise.

My view is that this bleed into "uncategorized" assets is inevitable. With the valuation multiples of mainstream sectors stretched to their limits, capital has no choice but to hunt for idiosyncratic catalysts. Expecting all these disconnected plays to outperform the broader market is a stretch, but trying to ignore the signals they send about underlying economic health? Good luck with that.
