The miss was attributed to higher fixed costs in biopharmaceuticals, raw material expenses, and restructuring charges. Fujifilm's shares declined as much as 18% in Tokyo Friday after the company disclosed Thursday its net profit dropped 30% in the three months ended June to 37.42 billion yen, equivalent to $236.2 million. The result is significantly lower than the market consensus forecast for Y60.46 billion. The stock was recently trading 17% lower. The Tokyo-based company attributed the sharp decline in profit to higher fixed costs in its biopharmaceutical business and higher raw material costs amid a global energy supply disruption following conflict in the Middle East. One-off expenses related to the restructuring of its business innovation segment, which now focuses on artificial intelligence, software and cloud services, and digital printers, also contributed to the earnings fall, the company said in its financial report. The profit miss came just as the multinational conglomerate announced Thursday it is considering a partial spin-off of the business innovation segment, which now accounts for around 35% of its entire revenue, through a public listing. If pursued, the spin-off is expected to be completed within the next two to three years, the company said. While Fujifilm began as a film and later digital photography technology developer, it has since diversified into areas ranging from biotechnology to beauty and cosmetics. In recent years, it has joined a broader group of traditional Japanese consumer goods companies that have strengthened their presence in the semiconductor sector, producing chemicals and packaging materials used in chip manufacturing as firms seek to capitalize on the global artificial intelligence boom. The restructuring of its business innovation operations marks another step in Fujifilm's efforts to expand into high-growth areas such as AI that have attracted strong investor interest. While the potential spin-off is viewed as a positive development long sought for by investors, analysts say it is unlikely to offset weak business performance that will continue to pressure valuation in the near term. "Since the spinoff is a 2-3 year plan while \[its biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization's\] further sharp deterioration is an immediate issue, we view these results as negative for the near-term stock price, with no likely catalysts or events until November's results," Citi analyst Masahiro Shibano said.
