# HSBC steps up Hong Kong share buy-back, cancelling 340,000 shares

HSBC Holdings ( (GB:HSBA) ) just unveiled an announcement.

HSBC Holdings has continued its current share buy-back programme by repurchasing 340,000 ordinary shares on 7 August 2026 via the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, at prices between HK$159.20 and HK$161.10, for cancellation. This latest transaction, executed through BNP Paribas Financial Markets, brings total repurchases since the launch of the programme on 5 August 2026 to 786,000 shares with an aggregate consideration of about US$16 million, marginally reducing the bank’s large share count and total voting rights, and signalling ongoing capital returns to shareholders.

The company confirmed that these Hong Kong repurchases are treated as off‑market under UK company law but qualify as on‑market buy-backs under Hong Kong listing and takeover rules. HSBC reported that none of the latest buy-backs were conducted on its UK trading venues, and said a further update on total voting rights will follow once the newly repurchased Hong Kong shares have been fully cancelled, a process that takes longer than for shares repurchased in the UK.
