Sonos’ latest earnings call struck a cautiously optimistic tone as management balanced solid operational momentum with a sharp warning on rising memory costs. Revenue, profits and cash flow all moved higher, supported by new products and a growing installed base, yet a pronounced industry-wide spike in memory prices is set to crimp margins well into fiscal 2027. Management stressed discipline and mitigation, arguing the long-term story remains intact despite near-term pressure.

## Revenue Growth

Sonos delivered third-quarter revenue of $375 million, up 9% year over year and landing near the top of its guidance range. The company highlighted that demand was broad-based across regions and products, signaling that its core audio franchise is regaining momentum after several softer years.

## Gross Margin and Profit Growth

Non-GAAP gross margin reached 45.5%, close to the high end of guidance, even as input costs started to rise. Non-GAAP gross profit dollars grew 11%, outpacing revenue by roughly two points and underscoring underlying margin resilience before the full impact of higher memory prices.

## Adjusted EBITDA Improvement

Adjusted EBITDA climbed to $44 million in the quarter, a 24% increase from a year earlier and again near the high end of guidance. The CEO noted that year-to-date adjusted EBITDA is up 41%, showing that cost controls and efficiency efforts are making a measurable difference in profitability.

## Regional Strength and Acceleration

Growth was particularly strong in international markets, with APAC revenue up 27% and EMEA up 17%, while the Americas rose a more modest 4%. On a constant currency basis, total revenue grew 7%, representing a three-point acceleration from the prior quarter and suggesting global demand is recovering.

## Return to Full-Year Growth

Looking ahead, management framed fiscal 2026 as a return to top-line growth after three years of decline. The company is targeting revenue expansion of 6% to 8%, or 4% to 6% excluding the benefit of an extra week, signaling renewed confidence in the long-term demand trajectory.

## Product and Platform Momentum

New hardware and software initiatives are increasingly contributing to results, with products like Play and Era 100 SL meaningfully boosting Q3 revenue. Sonos also announced its Amp Multi product shipping in late August, rolled out a redesigned app and teased a fall launch event centered on conversational computing and predictive intelligence.

## Improved Earnings Per Share

Earnings metrics showed notable improvement, with GAAP EPS at $0.25 versus a loss of $0.03 a year ago, aided by a tariff refund benefit. On a non-GAAP basis, EPS reached $0.27, up 52% year over year, reflecting better operating leverage despite emerging cost headwinds.

## Capital Allocation and Balance Sheet

The company continued to return capital to shareholders, repurchasing $30 million of stock in the quarter, which reduced the share count by about 1.7%. Sonos closed Q3 with $261 million in net cash and marketable securities and generated $40 million in free cash flow, reinforcing its financial flexibility.

## Operating Expense Discipline

Non-GAAP operating expenses declined 6% year-to-date versus last year, highlighting ongoing cost discipline even as the company invests in new products. In Q3, non-GAAP operating expenses grew only 3% year over year and came in slightly below the levels of the first two quarters.

## Large Installed Base

Sonos now counts more than 53 million connected devices across 17 million homes, a scale the company views as a key competitive advantage. Management said this installed base positions Sonos to capitalize on emerging AI and platform opportunities as it builds more intelligent and personalized audio experiences.

## Memory Cost Headwind

The biggest near-term challenge comes from sharply higher memory prices, which reduced Q3 adjusted EBITDA by about $14 million and cut gross margin by roughly 380 basis points. The company expects the headwind to intensify, with a projected $35 million impact in Q4 and about $58 million of pressure in fiscal 2026, weighing on margins.

## Q4 Margin and Profitability Pressure

Sonos guided Q4 GAAP gross margin to 39% to 41%, with non-GAAP margins about 120 basis points higher, implying meaningful degradation from the memory spike. Adjusted EBITDA is forecast in a wide range from a loss of $11 million to a gain of $18 million, reflecting the uncertainty around how quickly mitigation efforts can offset the cost surge.

## Inventory Build

Period-end inventory swelled to $158 million, up 37% from a year earlier, driven by higher memory costs, new product introductions and capitalized tariffs. While management framed this as strategic positioning, the build raises questions about working capital efficiency and potential margin risk if demand falls short.

## Tariff Refund Timing Uncertainty

The company has filed for $41 million in IEEPA tariff refunds and received $24 million in Q3, including $23 million of principal. Roughly $18 million remains outstanding, but management emphasized that the timing is uncertain and has not recorded the balance as a receivable, limiting its near-term financial impact.

## Operating Expense Drivers

On a GAAP basis, operating expenses increased 3% year over year, reflecting higher employee compensation, litigation costs and $4 million of restructuring charges. Even with these items, Sonos reiterated its commitment to maintaining a disciplined cost base while funding key strategic initiatives.

## Near-Term Margin Visibility for 2027

Management acknowledged that meaningful relief in memory prices is unlikely in the near term, creating a cloud over margin visibility through 2027. They expect mitigation actions in supply, cost and pricing to phase in over several years, with a more substantial margin recovery envisioned in 2028.

## Conservative Q4 Revenue Drivers

Q4 revenue guidance of $325 million to $355 million implies 13% to 23% growth, but includes an extra week that adds about $24 million, or roughly eight points of growth. Excluding that week, implied growth of 4% to 15% at a 10% midpoint presents a more measured outlook than the headline numbers suggest.

## CFO Transition

The company also announced that CFO Saori Casey plans to retire but will remain in place until a successor is identified. The leadership change comes as Sonos manages significant margin pressure and a busy product pipeline, adding another variable for investors to monitor.

## Forward-Looking Guidance and Outlook

Guidance for Q4 and fiscal 2026 underscores a push for growth despite the memory overhang, with Q4 revenue expected to rise strongly and adjusted EBITDA remaining positive when excluding memory effects. For fiscal 2026, Sonos targets mid-single to high-single-digit revenue growth and a roughly 11.7% adjusted EBITDA margin, with mitigation efforts aimed at delivering around a 500-basis-point annualized improvement into fiscal 2027.

Sonos’ latest earnings call painted a picture of a company regaining its growth footing while navigating a tough cost environment, especially around memory components. Investors will be watching closely to see whether product momentum, cost discipline and a powerful installed base can offset industry headwinds and turn today’s margin pressure into tomorrow’s operating leverage.
