The produce supplier, which recently recalled iceberg lettuce linked to the cyclospora outbreak, is now recalling foods that include jalapeños that are tied to salmonella cases. More jalapeños linked to a multistate salmonella outbreak are being recalled. This time, the recall includes salsas and guacamole sold in major grocery chains like Amazon's (AMZN) Whole Foods and Target (TGT) that were supplied by Taylor Farms. The privately held produce giant recently recalled iceberg lettuce possibly tied to this summer's massive cyclospora outbreak, which has sickened more than 12,000 people. Taylor Farms said Sunday that it recalled "finished products containing jalapeños" in 26 states after being notified that Coast Citrus Distributors, which sells its produce to wholesalers and restaurants, had recalled fresh jalapeños linked to the salmonella cases. Federal health officials have said a farm in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplies Coast Citrus is the possible source of the contaminated peppers. "Taylor Fresh Foods is no longer sourcing products from this farmer," the company said. Several fast-casual Mexican restaurants, such as Chipotle and Qdoba, have already said they are no longer serving the jalapeños linked to the outbreak. Qdoba and Sweetgreen aren't selling jalapeños at all right now, and Chipotle switched suppliers starting July 20. Chipotle's stock (CMG) has tumbled 13% over the last five days, while Sweetgreen's shares (SG) are down 8.5%. At least 345 people, mostly in Colorado and Minnesota, have contracted salmonella as part of this outbreak, as of Aug. 4, the latest update provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Salmonella, a bacterial pathogen, is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. People who contract salmonella often experience diarrhea, cramping and fever for about a week. Most recover on their own without antibiotics. Nearly all salmonella cases in the U.S. are foodborne. Most cases used to stem from eating undercooked poultry or eggs, but studies have shown that salmonella outbreaks linked to fresh produce have increased in recent years.
