# Anthropic Announces Invisible Watermarks in Claude-Generated Content, Traceable Even After Copy-Pasting

Anthropic is introducing machine-readable marking technology for its Claude series of AI models. All text generated by Claude will be embedded with invisible watermarks, while files such as images will include digitally signed provenance metadata. This initiative marks a substantive phase in the implementation of regulations governing AI content transparency.

According to Anthropic’s official statement released on August 11, the watermark is woven directly into the text content itself rather than being attached at the metadata level. **This means that even after the text is copied and pasted to other platforms, the watermark persists and may remain detectable even after partial editing.** This feature significantly enhances the traceability of AI-generated content, surpassing previous solutions that relied solely on metadata tagging.

The direct trigger for this plan was Anthropic’s signing of Article 50(2) of the EU AI Act, specifically the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. Under this code, **new Claude models launched in the EU from August 2, 2026, must support content marking from their release date.** Anthropic also stated that the marking mechanism will apply globally, covering all Claude product lines and partner cloud platforms, not just those in the EU.

## How the Watermark Works: Embedded in Text, Travels with Content

Anthropic employs two complementary technologies to mark content generated by Claude.

**The first is embedded text watermarking.** When a supported Claude model generates text, it weaves an invisible watermark directly into the text itself. This watermark does not alter the meaning, quality, or readability of the content, and users cannot detect it with the naked eye. Because the watermark is part of the text rather than additional metadata, it travels with the text when copied and pasted and may persist even after partial editing. Since the watermark is applied at the model level, any text generated through any Claude product or interface will carry this marker.

**The second is signed provenance metadata.** When Claude generates supported file types (such as .svg, .png, .jpg, etc.), it attaches digitally signed provenance metadata. This metadata adheres to the open standards of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), which is widely adopted in the industry to record content source information. If the signed metadata tag is present, it indicates that the file was processed by Claude and can be used to detect whether the file has been tampered with.

Anthropic clarified that the marking mechanism will cover all major Claude products and access channels, **including Claude Platform (API), Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag, and applies to cloud partners accessing via AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.**

**Geographically, the marking will apply to all regions where Claude provides services, not limited to the EU.**

**Regarding timelines, new models launched in the EU after August 2, 2026, must support marking from their release date.** For existing models released prior to this, EU regulations provide a transition period. Anthropic stated it is working to add marking support for these models and will update relevant guidelines in due course.

## Technical Limitations: A Signal, Not Definitive Proof

Anthropic explicitly disclosed the limitations of watermarking technology in its official statement, which is crucial for users and developers relying on this mechanism for content verification.

Detecting a Claude marker only indicates that the content was "possibly" processed by Claude; it does not fully confirm the complete origin of the content.

> For example, Claude may not be the original author—users often use Claude for proofreading, translation, summarization, or file conversion. Even if the output carries a Claude marker, the underlying ideas, text, or data may originate from other sources. Additionally, content may have been modified, excerpted, or merged with other materials after being processed by Claude.

**Conversely, the absence of a detected marker does not prove that the content was not AI-generated.** Several scenarios could lead to missing markers: the content was generated by a model released before the marking feature went live; the text underwent extensive editing, rewriting, translation, or mixing with other content; the text segment is too short to carry a reliable signal; file metadata was stripped during format conversion, resaving, or screenshotting; or the content comes from a platform, feature, or file format that does not yet support specific marking types.

Furthermore, Anthropic specifically noted in its statement that **developers deploying Claude in their own products should independently assess the specific requirements of Article 50 of the AI Act for their products and services.** Anthropic stated its goal is to support developers in fulfilling their respective transparency obligations and will release detailed guidance on marking and detection solutions once technical documentation is ready.

This means that for enterprises integrating Claude capabilities into downstream products, compliance responsibility for AI content marking does not automatically transfer due to Anthropic’s technical implementation. Developers must still proactively clarify the boundaries of their obligations under the relevant regulatory framework.
