# Surge in AI-Powered Cyber Attacks Hits Major U.S. Companies in 2026

The relentless rise of AI-driven cyberattacks in 2026 is rattling U.S. companies across industries. From retail to healthcare, organizations are scrambling to contain breaches that expose sensitive data and interrupt service delivery. The White House hinted at a cybersecurity coordination effort for AI developers and critical sectors last month, though details remain scant, even as recent hacks involving AI agents have surfaced.

January saw the sportswear giant Nike targeted, with ransomware attackers dumping a massive 1.4 terabytes of their data online. Nike stayed tight-lipped about ransom demands or ongoing investigation specifics, but the incident set the tone for a challenging year in corporate cybersecurity.

Not long after, the online dating platforms Bumble and Match reported breaches impacting user contact details, along with Panera Bread facing similar issues. Criminal groups seem to have refined social engineering tactics alongside technical cyber intrusions.

Resorts operator Wynn Resorts disclosed an intrusion where hackers reportedly siphoned employee information and demanded a bitcoin ransom approximating $1.5 million. This highlights how ransom demands continue to be a preferred weapon among attackers.

Manufacturing and healthcare sectors have also felt the sting. Stryker experienced a cyber incident attributed to an Iranian-linked group that disrupted order processing and wiped Windows devices, while West Pharmaceutical Services faced a data theft and system lockdown affecting its global operations.

Game publisher Take-Two Interactive confronted hacking exploits where 80 million business records were allegedly stolen following a breach of an analytics provider. Meanwhile, educational software developer Instructure, behind Canvas, suffered a hack exposing data from thousands of institutions before the attackers reportedly agreed to delete the stolen information.

The legal domain wasn't spared either. Law firm Blank Rome saw hackers impersonate their IT department to trick an attorney into sharing confidential client information, triggering a class-action lawsuit tied to the breach.

Even beverage powerhouse Coca-Cola temporarily halted production at several facilities after parts of its systems, including production operations, were compromised. Restoration efforts have since resumed but the event underscores the broad reach of today's cyber threats.

On a technical note, cybersecurity researchers flagged a widespread assault on Fortinet firewall and VPN devices, exposing some 75,000 systems globally-including those of Fortune 500 companies and government agencies.

With last month alone seeing so many sectors hit by clever social engineering ploys and ransomware, the year so far paints a picture of evolving threat vectors. How companies defend themselves against these increasingly sophisticated attacks may ultimately shape their operational resilience in an AI-fueled cyber era.
