# Micron or AMD: One AI Chip Stock Is an 'Incredible Opportunity,' the Other Isn't, Says Investor

**Micron (NASDAQ:MU)** and **Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD)** have both become big beneficiaries of the AI infrastructure boom, but they make their money from very different parts of it. Micron supplies the memory needed to keep powerful AI processors fed with data, including high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. AMD operates on the compute side, where its Instinct accelerators and EPYC server CPUs compete for a growing share of data-center spending. Put simply, AMD provides the computing horsepower, while Micron supplies an essential ingredient that helps those processors perform at their best.

Both approaches have paid off handsomely for investors so far this year. MU has soared about 204% in 2026, while AMD has gained around 119%. Yet, the ride has become much less enjoyable since both stocks peaked in late June. Micron has fallen about 29% from its late-June high, while AMD has lost ~20% from its own peak.

With both AI winners now well below their highs, investors looking to buy weakness face an interesting choice between them. Investor Julia Ostian has examined both opportunities, and her assessments reveal very different views of the risk and potential reward available at current prices.

Starting with MU, Ostian believes the selloff has improved the investment case rather than damaged it. "Nothing fundamental has changed and the stock is way cheaper," the investor said, while describing Micron as "an incredible opportunity as of right now." From her perspective, recent selling reflects nervousness surrounding AI spending and sentiment toward semiconductor stocks more than any deterioration in Micron's underlying demand.

There is another reason Ostian is willing to look through that volatility today. Hyperscalers continue pouring capital into AI infrastructure, while Micron is already converting that spending into real profits. "Micron has real earnings," she stressed, arguing that the company is ultimately "just doing its job by satisfying market demand." That distinction matters for her investment case, since Micron currently gets paid to supply memory products that AI infrastructure customers need.

That does not make MU a low-risk investment by any means today. Ostian calls memory a "high-risk, high-return industry" and acknowledges that its fortunes remain closely connected with AI spending and the semiconductor cycle. But again, following the stock's recent selloff, she believes the price offers a more appealing balance between those risks and Micron's earnings potential.

AMD receives a much less enthusiastic assessment despite Ostian recognizing the strength of its underlying business. The investor acknowledges that its "long-term opportunities in AI and computing look promising," but believes too much future success is already reflected in the share price. Ostian describes AMD as "priced for aggressive long-term earnings expansion," leaving the chipmaker with an extremely demanding bar to clear over the coming years.

That valuation is enough to keep Ostian away despite AMD's impressive operational progress. "I would avoid buying the stock at the current price," she said, arguing that AMD would need a much deeper pullback before its potential returns justify the risks. Her biggest concern is the amount of future earnings growth required to support today's price, warning that there is "no room for error over the coming years."

The comparison ultimately leaves Ostian favoring Micron as the better opportunity following the two stocks' recent selloffs. Reflecting that preference, the investor assigns MU shares a Buy rating, while giving AMD a Hold. (To watch Ostian's track record, click here)

Wall Street, however, sees no reason to choose just one of these AI chip stocks. Both Micron and AMD earn Strong Buy consensus ratings, although analysts see more room for MU to run. Micron's $1,569.07 average price target implies about 83% upside from current levels, while AMD's $640.82 target points to a 37% upside. (See MU stock forecast or AMD stock forecast)
