Target Makes Its First AI Hire at the Top
Target has appointed Chandhu Nair as its first Chief AI Officer, signaling the retailer's push to make artificial intelligence a bigger part of its strategy. The company also named Purvi Shah, a long-time Target hire, as Senior Vice President of User Experience in the same announcement.
Nair brings years of experience in retail technology and AI. Before joining Target, he served as Senior Vice President of Stores, Data, AI and Innovation at Lowe's and previously held roles at Staples and Gap Inc. (GAP).
His approach focuses on using AI to solve practical business problems rather than chasing hype. Nair commented on his new position, noting that the use of AI tech will help make "shopping easier for a guest, give a team member a better tool, make a business decision with more confidence or bring a new idea to market faster."
Notably, Nair starts his new position as Chief AI Officer at Target on August 24. The role shows that Target likely intends to use AI more consistently across its business. Many companies now use these tools to speed up operations and reduce labor costs, which in turn can boost revenue.
Target Expands AI Push as Retail Competition Rises
Target's appointment of Nair is not its first move into AI. The retailer has already developed AI tools such as Target Trend Brain, which helps buyers identify rising customer trends in areas like styles, colors and materials before demand peaks.
Target also launched a conversational AI shopping assistant with ChatGPT creator OpenAI during the last holiday season to help customers find products and gift ideas easier. These efforts show that the retailer is already testing ways AI can improve both its operations and customer experience.
Meanwhile, Target's move comes as major retailers race to strengthen their AI capabilities and lead the e-commerce race. Walmart (WMT) is already using AI agents across its stores and supply chain, while Gap has partnered with Gemini AI and Best Buy (BBY) is working with OpenAI and Google (GOOGL).
