# Tesla's "pure vision" approach faces renewed skepticism, analysts express loss of confidence in its autonomous driving scalability

Famous analyst and investor, Gary Black, a partner at Future Fund, believes that Tesla is scaling back its autonomous driving business development plans, leading to a loss of investor confidence in the company's ability to achieve breakthroughs in autonomous driving technology.

On Tuesday, Black posted continuously on the X platform, stating that Tesla is slowing down the rollout of its unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Robotaxi services, which has "deep-rooted fundamental reasons" behind it.

Black pointed out that Tesla previously planned to have its autonomous vehicle services cover half of the U.S. population by the end of last year; however, it later changed its goal to "doubling the fleet size every month." According to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's head of artificial intelligence, in a recent earnings call for the second quarter, the latest growth plan is now only "10% growth per week."

Black then compared Tesla's business scale with Waymo, Google's autonomous driving subsidiary: Waymo currently has 4,000 autonomous vehicles without safety drivers, completing over 500,000 Robotaxi rides per week.

X user Jeff Lutz disagreed with Black's viewpoint, arguing that if there were issues with the autonomous driving business, Tesla would not be continuously hiring more employees. In response to this comment, Black stated that Tesla's reluctance to roll out its autonomous driving business on a large scale may indicate management's internal concerns: the safety of FSD is not as high as people imagine.

Black added that Tesla's hiring of personnel and building of supporting infrastructure is based on a presumption: that the company can overcome various extreme scenarios and ultimately improve the reliability of autonomous driving to 99.999%. However, this investor pointed out that competitors' technology levels are also continuously improving.

He stated, "Due to cost considerations, Tesla initially chose to rely solely on a pure vision-based technical route, and now it can only grit its teeth and hope that competitors, even with more funding, cannot develop safer autonomous driving technology."

Black also mentioned that it is naive to solely believe Tesla's management's statements that "autonomous driving technology is about to mature and be implemented." "In my 30-year career in the investment industry, I have summarized one experience: you cannot just take management's word for it." He added that management has an obligation to release optimistic expectations, which is also part of their job responsibilities corresponding to their compensation
