# XPeng Competes for Family Users Again

XPeng is once again targeting the family SUV market.

On the evening of August 11, pre-sales for the XPeng G9L commenced, with a starting price of RMB 259,800. He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPeng Group, stated that the "L" in G9L stands for "Large," indicating that the G9L offers superior overall space compared to the G9.

This shift is first reflected in product definition.

When the G9 was previously launched, XPeng's messaging for this flagship SUV focused primarily on its 800V architecture, ultra-fast charging, and intelligent driving capabilities. With the G9L, these technologies remain, but space, comfort, and family travel have been prioritized.

Positioned as a large five-seater SUV, the G9L measures 5,120 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,100 mm. Although its dimensions place it in the large SUV category, XPeng has not added a third row, instead sticking to a five-seat configuration to allocate more space to the second row and the trunk. For family users, the product prioritizes second-row seating comfort and trunk cargo capacity. To cater to family use, the new model adds features such as rear-seat entertainment screens, dual-zone refrigerators, and an executive center console.

This change also extends to the product development level.

Public information indicates that the new vehicle is developed on the all-new G platform, sharing its technical architecture with the six-seater flagship SUV GX, whereas the current G9 uses a different platform. He Xiaopeng revealed that the G9L project was initiated three years ago, accumulating over 6.74 million kilometers of testing across 26 countries and regions.

The powertrain options have also been broadened, so family users are no longer limited to a single power source. The G9L is available in both pure electric and super range-extended versions. The pure electric version offers a maximum CLTC range of 755 km, while the range-extended version provides a maximum CLTC pure electric range of 435 km and a combined range of up to 1,602 km. Both powertrains utilize an 800V high-voltage platform and 5C ultra-fast charging batteries. The new car also comes standard with rear-wheel steering and features the upgraded second-generation VLA system.

Adding a range-extended option alongside the pure electric version is a significant product choice for the G9L's entry into the family market, addressing range anxiety during long-distance travel. Family SUV users typically have a larger travel radius and are more sensitive to long-distance charging convenience. In recent years, brands like Li Auto and AITO have achieved scale in the mid-to-high-end SUV market by adopting the range-extended route, making it an increasingly important powertrain form in this segment.

Beyond powertrain choices, seating layout is becoming a key focus in the competition for new energy SUVs.

From the Li Auto L7 and AITO M7 to the increasing number of large five-seater models launched by domestic brands, product density in the RMB 250,000 to 350,000 market is continuously rising. Space, comfort, charging convenience, and intelligence alone no longer constitute sufficient competitive barriers; automakers must address all these needs simultaneously. With a starting pre-sale price of RMB 259,800, the G9L enters directly into this competitive segment.

For XPeng, the G9L also serves the task of completing its mid-to-high-end SUV product lineup. As models like the MONA M03 expand the sales base, XPeng's product coverage is extending into broader price ranges, with the G9L and GX responsible for the mid-to-high-end layout. The former adheres to a large five-seater configuration, while the latter adopts a six-seater layout, catering to different family needs.

At the launch event, He Xiaopeng expressed his hope that the G9L would become one of the best large five-seater SUVs in the RMB 300,000 class. This remains to be verified by the market. This time, XPeng did not simply replicate the past approach of emphasizing technical parameters for its flagship SUVs; instead, it attempted to integrate existing capabilities such as 800V architecture and intelligent driving into more specific family usage scenarios.

This is also a microcosm of the current competition in the mid-to-high-end new energy SUV market.

As technologies like intelligence and fast charging gradually become common configurations across more models, the focus of competition among automakers is shifting from comparing individual technologies to evaluating how space, powertrains, and technology can collectively serve family use. The number of orders the G9L secures will test the market acceptance of XPeng's large five-seater strategy.
