# Google AI competition is in crisis, co-founder Sergey Brin takes action to reorganize the DeepMind team

According to media reports citing two sources, Google co-founder Sergey Brin has urged the company's key artificial intelligence (AI) teams to fully commit to the development of the Gemini model in recent months; the parent company Alphabet is currently striving to close the gap with its competitors.

One anonymous source stated that in April of this year, as Anthropic gained an edge with its powerful Claude Mythos model preview, Brin spoke at an internal meeting attended by hundreds of employees, calling for the Google DeepMind AI lab to accelerate its development pace.

Last November, Google's Gemini model briefly surpassed its competitors, but new versions released by Anthropic and OpenAI subsequently put Google back in a position of catching up. According to one of the sources and another informed individual, by August of this year, internal testing showed that Gemini still lagged behind competitors in areas such as program coding, leading Google to delay the launch of the next-generation flagship Gemini by two months.

On August 5, Google announced a complete overhaul of the leadership of the Google DeepMind AI department, with department head Demis Hassabis stepping down from his management role and being succeeded by his deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu. Hassabis transitioned to the role of chairman, with reduced management responsibilities. Meanwhile, the initial two technical co-leads of Gemini resigned to co-found a startup.

Although some industry observers question whether Google is withdrawing from the large model race, interviews with seven individuals familiar with the development of Gemini indicate that Alphabet's commercialization strategy and last week's personnel restructuring are closely related to efforts to compete for model dominance
