Algeria has signed two contracts to begin construction of key infrastructure for its Integrated Phosphate Project, marking the transition to the implementation phase of one of the country's largest mining and industrial developments, local Arabic language news portal Elhayat reported on Wednesday.
The first contract covers the construction of port facilities in Annaba and was signed between Sonatrach and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) the report said.
The second contract was signed between Sonatrach and Italy's Saipem for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of production facilities at Bled El Hadba in Tebessa Province and Oued Kebrit in Souk Ahras Province.
According to the report, the project is designed to develop Algeria's phosphate resources in the eastern phosphate basin and integrate them with the country's natural gas resources to establish an industrial chain for fertiliser and chemical production while supporting growth of non-hydrocarbon exports.
