For context, Molina Healthcare is a managed-care insurer focused on government-sponsored health programs, including Medicaid and Medicare.

## **Why Did Burry Add to Molina Healthcare?**

Burry's purchase comes after Molina's second-quarter earnings triggered a pullback in the stock. The company reported $10.87 billion in revenue, beating the $10.83 billion consensus estimate. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.51, ahead of the $1.39 estimate. Molina also raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to at least $5.25.

Despite the earnings beat and higher outlook, investors focused on rising medical costs. Molina's Medical Care Ratio rose to 92.2%, with its Marketplace MCR reaching 88.9% due to higher member acuity and risk adjustments.

Jefferies analyst David Windley also flagged weaker-than-expected enrollment in the Marketplace business. He said the decline raised concerns about the segment's near-term performance.

Still, Burry appears to view the post-earnings weakness as a buying opportunity. Molina stock remains up about 18% year to date, despite the recent pullback.

## **Burry Sees a Potential Election Catalyst**

Burry also pointed to the upcoming election season as a potential catalyst for Molina.

Molina runs much of its business through government-sponsored programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. That makes healthcare policy and election outcomes important for the insurer. Election cycles can bring changes to healthcare policy and government funding. They can also affect state contracts and the outlook for managed-care providers.

Burry's comment suggests he sees the political backdrop as a potential boost for Molina. Still, the company will need to control medical costs and improve its Marketplace business.
