# Google Intensifies Gemini Flash Releases: Enhanced Coding Capabilities, Prices Halved, Flagship Model Launch Date Still Undecided

Google is once again accelerating the iteration of its Gemini models.

On Thursday, August 13 (US Eastern Time), Google announced the launch of Gemini 3.7 Flash, highlighting its capabilities in coding, agents, and complex workflows. Google described it as its current "most intelligent work-oriented model," offering further improvements over its predecessor in code debugging, production-grade code generation, and multi-step task execution.

This marks the fourth Flash series model launched by Google in a short period. Just one day before its parent company, Alphabet, released its earnings report on July 22, Google rolled out three versions simultaneously: Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, all targeting AI agents and developer workflows. Now, less than a month later, the Gemini Flash line sees another update.

Google also highlighted pricing as a key selling point this time: until the end of this year, the introductory price for Gemini 3.7 Flash is $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens, both half the original price of Gemini 3.6 Flash.

However, alongside the rapid iteration of the Flash series, the market remains more concerned about the flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, which still lacks a clear launch date. The delay has sparked investor skepticism regarding Google's development roadmap, particularly in fields like AI coding. Media outlets have pointed out that the various uncertainties surrounding the release date of the next flagship model have heightened external doubts about whether Google can surpass competitors and successfully translate its massive AI investments into market-leading tools and services.

## From "Writing Code" to "Delivering Applications": New Model Strengthens Complex Task Execution

Google has explicitly positioned the core upgrades of Gemini 3.7 Flash around coding and complex workflows.

Google stated that the new model shows significant improvements over the previous generation in debugging, problem-solving, and generating code ready for production deployment. It enables application development with fewer prompts and enhances the developer experience in continuous, multi-step tasks.

In terms of positioning, version 3.7 Flash does not merely pursue faster response speeds but moves further toward being a "work-oriented model" capable of completing tasks.

Test data released by Google shows that in the FrontierCode 1.1 Main benchmark, Gemini 3.7 Flash scored 43.6%, higher than the 34.4% achieved by 3.6 Flash. In the DeepSWE v1.1 test, the score improved from 49.0% to 65.3%. In the WebDev Arena, the new model achieved an Elo rating of 1588, also surpassing the 1538 score of 3.6 Flash.

Such capabilities are particularly important for AI coding. What developers truly need is not just for the model to generate snippets of code, but to understand existing code, locate bugs, invoke tools, make modifications, and ultimately deliver a runnable application.

Google claims that 3.7 Flash can engage in deeper "thinking" regarding multi-step planning and tool invocation, adjusting strategies more effectively when encountering obstacles during execution, thereby reducing the need for repeated user prompting and manual intervention.

## Low-Cost Strategy to Capture the Agent Market: Token Prices Halved Compared to Previous Generation

Beyond performance improvements, pricing is another "trump card" for Gemini 3.7 Flash.

Google's introductory price is $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens, valid until the end of this year. Starting January 1, 2027, prices will revert to $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens.

In other words, until the end of this year, the cost for developers to use 3.7 Flash is only half the original price of the previous 3.6 Flash.

This strategy aligns with Google's recent approach of densely releasing Flash models: by enhancing model capabilities, reducing latency, and lowering token costs, Google aims to make Flash the foundational model for large-scale deployment of AI agents.

Indeed, the three Flash models launched by Google on July 21 already reflected this direction. Gemini 3.6 Flash was positioned by Google as a "work-oriented" model for coding, knowledge work, and multimodal tasks; 3.5 Flash-Lite emphasized low latency and high throughput, suitable for scenarios involving heavy usage such as agent search and document processing; and 3.5 Flash Cyber targeted cybersecurity tasks, integrating with the CodeMender code security agent.

Now, 3.7 Flash continues to advance along the path of "high performance + high efficiency + low cost." Google clearly hopes to capture more developers and enterprise users during the rapid commercialization of AI agents.

## Flash Accelerates Iteration, While Google's AI Flagship Remains in Waiting

However, for investors, the rapid iteration of the Flash series cannot completely mask the issue of the undecided flagship model.

On July 21, when launching 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber, Google stated that Gemini 3.5 Pro was being tested with partners and planned to open to a broader user base as soon as it was "ready." At the same time, Google announced that it had initiated the most ambitious round of pre-training for Gemini 4 to date.

But as of the launch of Gemini 3.7 Flash on August 13, Google has still not provided a clear public release date for Gemini 3.5 Pro.

This has created a rather obvious contrast in Google's AI product lineup: the Flash series is being updated frequently, but the Pro model, which bears the burden of flagship competition, still lacks a clear timeline.

Commentators have pointed out that the delay of 3.5 Pro has drawn investor attention to Google's AI product roadmap, especially in areas like AI coding where commercial value is rising rapidly. As OpenAI and Anthropic continue to push forward with their top-tier models, the timing of Google's next flagship release has become an important indicator for the market to gauge its AI competitiveness.

Media outlets have also noted that while Google stated in July that 3.5 Pro was being tested with partners and would be launched soon, it still failed to provide a specific release date during the announcement of 3.7 Flash.

In other words, Google is currently strengthening its competitiveness in the "AI application implementation" sector through the rapid iteration of the Flash series. However, in the battlefield of top-tier models that determine the upper limit of AI capabilities, the market is still waiting for answers.

## Google Bets on Faster Iteration, Gemini 4 Already in Training

Google's moves are not isolated events but part of its strategy to accelerate AI model iteration.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, previously stated during the July earnings call that the company aims to release models at a faster pace and has already invested significant computing resources in training the next-generation Gemini 4.

Prior to Alphabet's earnings release on July 22, Google had already taken the lead in intensively updating the Flash product line: launching 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber on July 21, followed by 3.7 Flash on August 13.

From a product rhythm perspective, Google is significantly shortening the iteration cycle of the Flash series. The goal is not only to catch up with competitors' model release speeds but also to seize the infrastructure entry point for developers and enterprise applications as AI agents transition from "chatting" to actual task execution.

Google has also further strengthened the security capabilities of 3.7 Flash this time, including protection against malicious hacker attacks and the misuse of dangerous chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials, while striving to minimize impact on normal development and research uses.

Currently, Gemini 3.7 Flash is available via Google Antigravity and the Gemini API, and can be used in Google AI Studio and Android Studio. Google's AI productivity agent, Gemini Spark, will also begin using 3.7 Flash starting August 13.

Therefore, the significance of Gemini 3.7 Flash may lie not just in being "another new model"—Google is using faster Flash iterations, stronger coding and agent capabilities, and lower token prices to compete for the AI application implementation market. However, when Gemini 3.5 Pro will truly go live remains a key missing piece in the puzzle of Google's AI competitiveness.
