# American hometown forum Reddit will be included in the S&P 500 index, soaring in after-hours trading

The popular American forum Reddit will officially be included in the benchmark S&P 500 index starting August 18, with its after-hours stock price surging nearly 12%.

According to reports from foreign media, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on the 13th that Reddit will join the S&P 500 index, replacing the property management company AvalonBay Communities, which is set to be acquired; Reddit also becomes the second pure social media company to be included in this benchmark index after Meta. The related adjustment will take effect before the market opens next Tuesday (18th).

Reddit is a popular forum in the United States, with over 100,000 active subreddits discussing various topics, and it continues to leverage AI technology to optimize its advertising platform.

Reddit's latest financial report released in late July showed that its revenue for the second quarter (April-June) increased by 61% year-on-year to $805 million, achieving over 60% revenue growth for eight consecutive quarters. The number of daily active unique users (DAUs) in the last quarter grew by 18% year-on-year, reaching 130.3 million.

However, Reddit admitted during the earnings call that "search referral traffic is quite volatile," which once triggered selling pressure on its stock and intensified market concerns about its over-reliance on Google for acquiring new users.

The content on Reddit forums serves as excellent material for AI giants to train their models, and starting in 2024, Reddit signed a $60 million annual content licensing agreement with Google. However, recent reports indicate that Reddit is reviewing its partnership with Google, primarily due to dissatisfaction with Google's AI summaries leading to a loss of search traffic; this rumor has also raised market concerns.

Reddit's stock closed at $158.12 on the 13th, rebounding from a low following the earnings report; after the news of its inclusion in the S&P, it surged nearly 12% in after-hours trading.

The S&P 500 index adjusts its constituent stocks quarterly, and companies included must meet various profitability and other standards. After the index adjustment takes effect, mutual funds and ETFs that passively track the S&P 500 index must immediately include the new constituent stocks in their portfolios, which typically drives a wave of upward momentum.
