OpenAI recently cut the price of two of the models in its GPT-5.6 lineup. It lowered the price of Luna, its fastest and cheapest model, by 80%, while trimming the cost of Terra, its mid-tier option, by 20%. Meanwhile, Sol, the firm's flagship model, kept its price steady but gained a faster processing mode. Similarly, Anthropic made pricing cuts on its models. The company launched Claude Opus 5 at half the price of Fable 5, its previous top-tier model. Weeks later, Anthropic also scrapped a planned price hike for Claude Sonnet 5, keeping its lower introductory rate instead of raising it as initially planned. ## **Businesses Turn to Cheaper Chinese AI Models** OpenAI and Anthropic price cuts reflect growing pressure from Chinese AI developers, whose models are cheaper for businesses looking to cut AI costs. Several enterprise firms are already using rival models for parts of their work. DoorDash (DASH), a food delivery platform, has been using models from Moonshot AI, a Chinese AI startup, for coding tasks. Siemens AG (SIE), a German industrial firm, and Airbnb (ABNB), a U.S. home-rental company, are also testing models from Chinese AI providers such as DeepSeek and Alibaba (BABA), the world's largest e-commerce and retail platform. The pivot to Chinese models is also spreading beyond a few firms. Data from OpenRouter, an AI model platform, shows that Chinese models from DeepSeek and Z.ai have overtaken both Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT in token use on the outlet. DeepSeek was also the most-used model maker by token share during that period. The price gap helps explain the shift. One million output tokens cost $50 on Anthropic's Fable, compared with $15 on Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model and $0.87 on DeepSeek V4 Pro. That gives businesses a much cheaper option for tasks that do not need the most advanced models. ## **Can I Buy OpenAI and Anthropic Stocks?** OpenAI and Anthropic remain privately held AI companies, so neither has a publicly traded stock yet. However, both companies have filed private IPO paperwork, and are targeting a listing between 2026 and 2027.
