# Microsoft and Oracle: J.P. Morgan Hikes One AI Stock's Price Target but Lowers the Other – Here's Why

**Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)** and **Oracle (NYSE:ORCL)** have both come under considerable pressure this year as investors grapple with the enormous capital spending required to build out AI infrastructure. The spending has weighed on free cash flow at both companies, while concerns over whether these investments will ultimately deliver adequate returns have also been giving investors the jitters.

Both, however, have also rebounded sharply from recent lows. Microsoft's stronger-than-expected earnings have helped the stock turn positive on a year-to-date basis, but the results also gave a boost to Oracle, although it is still down by 22% in 2026.

Assessing the outlook for both software giants, J.P. Morgan's Samik Chatterjee, an analyst ranked in 4th spot among the thousands of Street stock experts, takes a bullish stance on Microsoft's growth prospects. He expects growth at both Azure and Microsoft 365 Commercial Cloud to accelerate, with the ongoing AI infrastructure build-out serving as the "key underlying driver."

Microsoft's cloud applications, including Copilot, essentially provide an internal source of demand for the company's AI infrastructure. This gives Microsoft an opportunity to turn its infrastructure investments into differentiated, high-margin software offerings, while also benefiting from external demand for AI infrastructure from enterprises and AI-native companies.

Chatterjee also sees an advantage in Microsoft's ability to offer a full-stack public cloud platform. With computing capacity constrained, the company can prioritize higher-margin opportunities instead of competing solely for "bare-metal services." It can also direct computing resources toward its highly profitable Productivity and Business Processes segment while improving efficiency through investments in custom chips and internally developed AI models.

"We believe the portfolio mix, across infrastructure and applications, positions the company to drive high-teens revenue and earnings CAGR, but with lower support from external capital relative to hyperscaler peers," the 5-star analyst said. "We believe the combination of high revenue and earnings growth as well as lower capital needs than peers should justify a return to the historical premium relative to the broader market, if not higher."

As such, Chatterjee maintained an Overweight (i.e., Buy) rating on the shares, while his price target has gone from $550 to $625, implying the stock will gain 26% over the coming year. (To watch Chatterjee's track record, click here)

Oracle presents a somewhat different proposition. Chatterjee continues to see "significant upside," driven by a sharp acceleration in revenue as the company expands its AI infrastructure capacity, alongside the possibility of a valuation re-rating. Oracle currently trades at a substantial discount to comparable AI infrastructure and enterprise software companies, partly because investors remain concerned about the enormous capital requirements associated with its expansion.

The analyst expects Oracle's infrastructure expansion to run ahead of the revenue generated from that capacity, leaving the company with substantial financing needs. He estimates Oracle will need to raise approximately $20 billion of capital annually on average (through FY30), including around $40 billion in FY27. Chatterjee also acknowledges that his capital expenditure forecasts are above management's expectations because he anticipates sustained AI infrastructure demand and further investment to support growth.

That said, the analyst also takes a bullish stance here too. "Despite the increase in the debt position to fund the infrastructure build, we see sizeable upside to the equity valuation for the company led by a combination of profit growth as well as a re-rating of the valuation multiple," Chatterjee summed up.

While the analyst rates ORCL as Overweight too, given the enormous capital intensity and financing requirements of Oracle's AI build-out, combined with the move to a December 2027 valuation date, his price target has been lowered from $210 to $200. Nevertheless, there's still potential upside of 33% from current levels.

Both these stocks get plenty of favorable reviews elsewhere on the Street, with both claiming Strong Buy consensus ratings. MSFT's average price target stands at $564.49, implying shares will climb by 14% in the months ahead. ORCL stock's is projected to gain 71.5%, given the average target clocks in at $258.14.
