# McDonald's Takes Direct Aim at Starbucks

**McDonald's** is making its first national push into energy drinks, opening a new front in the afternoon beverage battle against Starbucks, Dutch Bros and convenience-store chains. The move matters because energy drinks could give McDonald's a higher-margin way to generate traffic outside its traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner peaks.

McDonald's launched its **Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer** nationwide Monday following what the company described as strong customer response during U.S. testing. The drink combines Red Bull with blue raspberry flavoring and freeze-dried dragonfruit pieces.

Customers can also choose a reduced-sugar version made with Red Bull Zero or buy a standard 8.4-ounce Red Bull can.

The opportunity could be larger than simply shifting existing beverage purchases.

A Citi survey found **60% of energy-drink consumption at restaurants and coffee shops is incremental**, suggesting the category can create new purchases rather than cannibalize coffee or soda. Another 74% of respondents said they were very or somewhat interested in buying energy drinks from restaurants or coffee shops, including 44% who were very interested.

Morgan Stanley has consequently called McDonald's energy-drink platform a **swing factor** to watch during the second half.

That potentially puts McDonald's into more direct competition with afternoon caffeine destinations including **Starbucks , Dutch Bros** and Black Rock Coffee Bar (BRCB), alongside Dunkin, 7 Brew and convenience stores.

McDonald's shares slipped 0.3% in premarket trading to $272.13, near the lower end of their 52-week range of $260.96 to $341.75.

**Investors Takeaway**

The key test is whether energy drinks actually **increase afternoon traffic and average checks**, rather than simply replacing existing beverage orders.

Investors should watch comparable-store sales, guest counts and management commentary on beverage mix during upcoming earnings reports. If the platform produces genuinely incremental visits, McDonald's could expand flavors and use its enormous U.S. footprint to become a meaningful competitor in afternoon caffeine.

The risk is execution. If demand proves temporary or cannibalizes higher-margin McCafe purchases, the financial impact could remain small.

For Starbucks and Dutch Bros investors, sustained McDonald's adoption would matter because it would add a massive, value-oriented competitor to a category that has become increasingly important for afternoon traffic.
