Google won the internal business data and software code of the now-defunct low-cost airline **Spirit Airlines** at a bankruptcy auction held in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, bidding $10 million and beating AI training service provider Mercor's bid of $7.5 million.

In a statement, Google said that these assets would help optimize its products and AI models; it also added, "All the data we acquire will be processed by a third party to remove all personally identifiable information."

Mercor stated, "Many companies hold decades of records that fully restore the operational patterns of real businesses; the data from Spirit Airlines is representative of the value found in the asset disposal of bankrupt companies."

The transaction is pending approval at a hearing on Wednesday. Sources revealed that Google is acquiring Spirit Airlines' internal business data, **excluding customer information and credit card-related data**. Insiders said the court would appoint an independent third-party organization at the Wednesday hearing to ensure that this data undergoes personal information stripping by a third party.

In recent months, several companies, including Mercor, have been competing to acquire the business data of bankrupt or acquired companies. This includes Slack chat records, content from GitHub and Asana platforms, Google Docs, and historical employee meeting records, all of which are used to train and run AI models. The demand for this has been driven by the proliferation of AI agents: these agents can perform various tasks for users, such as technical customer service responses, clinical trial management, and invoice verification.

Spirit Airlines ceased operations in May, laying off approximately 17,000 employees. The assets being auctioned include the airline's employee emails and chat records
