# A week of pivots: How legacy giants and struggling startups are bracing for impact

We’ve been tracking a fascinatingly chaotic mix of corporate updates this week, and if there is a single through-line to be found, it’s the intense pressure to either scale aggressively or cut to the bone.

Consider how traditional sectors are scrambling to modernize. Elevance Health (ELV.US) managed to beat Q2 estimates, but what caught our attention was their push to streamline operations with artificial intelligence, signaling that even health insurance is desperate for tech-driven efficiency. This underlying need for better tech infrastructure is keeping companies like NXP Semiconductors (NXP.US) busy. Despite some recent market pullback, NXP is breaking ground on new packaging facilities in Malaysia and locking in automotive orders with BMW for its ultra-wideband solutions.

When you have cash right now, you use it to consolidate. Motorola Solutions (MSI.US) is riding a wave of double-digit growth, capping it off with a USD 950 million note offering and a massive USD 1.5 billion acquisition of D-Fend. But the story is grim for those still searching for a sustainable business model. Quantum-Si (QSI.US) is slashing its workforce by 20% and delaying its flagship protein sequencing system as it fights a Nasdaq delisting notice. We see a similar defensive crouch at VolitionRx (VNRX.US), where management is promising drastic cuts to operating expenses just to keep the lights on, even as they tout new clinical utility for their sepsis tests.

The rest of the market seems equally bifurcated. In energy, Targa Resources (TERG.US) is projecting confidence, hiking its growth capital forecast and building three new gas processing plants on the back of a 20-year deal with ExxonMobil. Meanwhile, DTE Energy (DTE.US) posted solid profits but saw its preferred shares inexplicably under pressure recently. And in the consumer space, CarMax (KMX.US) is busy digitizing dealer registrations to maintain its grip on the used car market, while Chinese lending platform X Financial (XYF.US) navigates leadership shakeups amid a steep drop in loan originations.

It’s a stark reminder that while the AI narrative dominates the headlines, the reality on the ground is a street fight for margin preservation.
