# The Hidden Corners of Capital: AI Pivots, Bankruptcies, and the Survival of the Uncategorized

I'm told that while capital frantically crowds into a handful of tech behemoths, a silent restructuring is playing out among peripheral sectors and uncategorized stocks. This matters because when you look away from the multi-trillion-dollar noise, you see how true corporate Darwinism operates—you either embrace AI, get restructured, or quietly exit the stage.

Take **Groupon (GRPN.US)** for example. The former daily-deals giant recently approved a massive restructuring plan dubbed "Project Foundry." The company is slashing up to 24% of its global workforce to pivot toward an AI-driven operating model. Although Q1 2026 gross billings dipped slightly year-over-year, management bumped its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to between USD 75 million and USD 80 million, giving the stock a recent boost. And yet... the truth, as usual, is more complicated. Can cost-cutting pave the way for a genuine AI narrative? Good luck with that.

Leaning into AI is clearly the survival tactic du jour. **Coherent (COHH.US)** has gone much further. As a leader in photonics, it reported a record USD 7 billion in FY 2026 revenue. It even secured a USD 50 million preliminary agreement under the CHIPS Act to expand its AI infrastructure optical networks facility. Driven by this and favorable policy winds, its stock has significantly outperformed the broader market this year. **Benchmark Electronics (BHE.US)** is also reaping the rewards of advanced computing, posting a 71% year-over-year revenue surge in its AC&C sector in Q2 2026, pushing overall non-GAAP EPS up by 36%.

Even medical device makers like **Smith & Nephew (SNN.US)** are upgrading their tech, launching a surgical robotics research partnership in August 2026. However, despite a 3% bump in first-half earnings, management still lowered its 2026 revenue outlook—a stark reminder that tech concepts don't automatically fix core business hurdles. Similarly, Chinese medical aesthetics platform **So-Young International (SY.US)** delivered a massive 185.8% jump in medical aesthetics service revenue for Q1 2026, yet still recorded a net loss.

On the flip side, we have assets deeply entrenched in turmoil. **Hertz Global Holdings (HTZGQ.US)** is a fascinating case study. While it posted USD 2.4 billion in Q2 2026 revenue with positive GAAP net income, the company was hit with a class-action lawsuit in August alleging material misstatements regarding liquidity. The stock continues to lag the sector. As for **Akoustis Technologies (AKTS.US)**, a recent ticker change signals its descent into bankruptcy proceedings, with some assets quietly sold to SpaceX. Meanwhile, **Waterside Capital Corporation (WATR.US)** remains functionally in liquidation.

My view is that in an era of fractured liquidity, getting bought out or fiercely protecting cash flow might be the only viable exits. **Luxfer Holdings (LXFR.US)** managed a soft landing, agreeing to an all-cash buyout in July 2026. On the yield side, mortgage REIT **Orchid Island Capital (ORC.US)** is holding the line, maintaining its USD 0.10 monthly dividend and swinging to a profit in Q2 2026. The market's folding process is accelerating, and the next few quarters will reveal who gets to stay at the table.
