# D-Wave and NTT DOCOMO expand quantum network optimization

D-Wave Quantum ( (QBTS) ) has provided an announcement.

On August 18, 2026, D-Wave Quantum and Japan’s largest mobile operator NTT DOCOMO announced the deployment of DOCOMO’s second production quantum application based on D-Wave technology, expanding their collaboration beyond the initial use case of reducing paging signals in tracking areas. The new application uses D-Wave’s annealing-based and hybrid quantum optimization to tackle a broader network planning challenge, integrating results directly into DOCOMO’s daily operations.

The production system optimizes tracking area lists across multiple tracking areas, cutting the daily peak volume of location registration signals by 65.3% and paging signals by 7.0%, thereby easing signaling load and improving operational efficiency. In a representative scenario involving 333 base stations, three tracking area lists and nine tracking areas, the quantum-driven optimization completed in about five minutes, underscoring D-Wave’s push to demonstrate tangible performance gains and signaling to telecom stakeholders that quantum computing is moving into practical, multi-use network operations.
