The approved vehicles must adhere to strict restrictions: they can only operate along the Las Vegas Strip, are limited to a speed of 45 miles per hour, are prohibited from picking up passengers near the airport, and must be equipped with human supervision and labeled \"Robotaxi.\" Compared to the unsupervised model in Texas, Nevada's regulations are stricter, and Clark County has stated it will bear the derivative impacts but did not participate in the formulation of the terms" datetime: "2026-08-19T23:47:54.000Z" locales: - [zh-CN](https://longbridge.com/zh-CN/news/296411508.md) - [en](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296411508.md) - [zh-HK](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/296411508.md) generator: "portal-rs" --- # Tesla applies to deploy 5,000 Robotaxis in Las Vegas, but only 10 are approved Tesla's plan to advance its Robotaxi fleet in Nevada, USA, has encountered significant setbacks. The company originally intended to deploy up to 5,000 autonomous taxis in the state but ultimately received operational permits for only 10 vehicles. In June of this year, Tesla submitted an application to the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) seeking approval to operate 5,000 autonomous taxis in Las Vegas. However, unexpectedly, the NTA's permit document signed on July 27 only allowed the operation of 10 autonomous taxis locally. The permit also stipulates that these 10 autonomous taxis can only operate within designated corridors along the Las Vegas Strip approved by the NTA, and their speed must not exceed 45 miles per hour. A critical point for the tourism industry is that, unless permission is obtained from the airport operator and all necessary government approvals are secured, the permit prohibits autonomous taxis from picking up passengers within a 0.25-mile radius of the airport. Each operational vehicle must be marked "Robotaxi"; before each trip begins, passengers must be informed that they are riding in an autonomous vehicle; additionally, operations must implement "appropriate human oversight" according to the standards of the Society of Automotive Engineers. This oversight requirement represents a regression compared to Tesla's operational model in other regions: since January of this year, the company has been providing passenger services without a safety supervisor in certain areas of Austin, Texas, while the terms in Nevada indicate that regulators are not yet prepared to grant Tesla the same level of leniency locally. Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, does not issue operational permits but must accept the approval results from the NTA. The county stated that this situation leaves it to bear the impacts of subsequent derivative issues without participating in the formulation of relevant permit terms. A spokesperson for Clark County stated, "Although Clark County has not authorized such vehicles to operate on our roads, the operation of autonomous taxis will still have a direct impact on us. Affected county departments include the Clark County Fire Department, the Business Licensing Department, and Harry Reid International Airport. We are working to determine how to properly interface with such operational businesses in the future." Tesla had already been preparing for this before obtaining the permit. The company is investing $3.1 million to renovate a 37,000-square-foot building in the southwestern valley of Las Vegas and is also hiring for autonomous taxi positions located in Las Vegas. Unlike Zoox and Motional, which acquire vehicles through leasing or partnerships, Tesla manufactures its own cars and has now centralized its commercial operating permits on the same platform. In Las Vegas alone, Zoox reported that its fleet has traveled over 3 million kilometers since last year and has provided free services to nearly one million passengers; it currently operates about 50 vehicles on the Las Vegas Strip, with pricing at a "comfortable" level, higher than the standard UberX fare. Zoox's long-term operational experience in Nevada—reportedly, its total number of vehicles on the Las Vegas Strip has reached 100, with nearly 350,000 rides—likely explains why the NTA chose to start with just 10 vehicles Rather than on a larger scale: The organization has actually used Zoox's deployment model as a template for gradually expanding new licenses. At present, Tesla can only deploy 10 autonomous taxis in Las Vegas, which can only operate within a quarter-mile stretch of the Las Vegas Strip, with a maximum speed limit of 45 miles per hour. The official start time for passenger service has not yet been announced ### Related Stocks - [TSLA.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLA.US.md) - [TSL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSL.US.md) - [TSLG.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLG.US.md) - [TSLS.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLS.US.md) - [TSLR.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLR.US.md) - [TESL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TESL.US.md) - [TSLQ.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLQ.US.md) - [TSLL.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLL.US.md) - [TSLT.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLT.US.md) - [TSLZ.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLZ.US.md) - [TSDD.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSDD.US.md) - [TSLI.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLI.US.md) - [TSLO.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLO.US.md) - [TSLW.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLW.US.md) - [TSLY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLY.US.md) - [TSYY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSYY.US.md) - [TYYY.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TYYY.US.md) - [CRSH.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/CRSH.US.md) - [TSLP.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/TSLP.US.md) - [MAGX.US](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/MAGX.US.md) - [07766.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/07766.HK.md) - [09366.HK](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/09366.HK.md) ## Related News & Research - [Tesla reveals plans for Robotaxi charging hub in Austin](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296260401.md) - [Nevada caps Tesla’s Vegas ‘Robotaxi’ fleet at 10 — it asked for 5,000](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296134630.md) - [Tesla Robotaxi gets a massive upgrade in Nevada](https://longbridge.com/en/news/296571868.md) - [Tesla Is Finally Getting Ready to Demo a Flying Roadster.
