L&T said its transportation infrastructure business vertical is part of the consortium, which will deliver a fully integrated APM system, encompassing design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness of all associated infrastructure and systems. The contract was awarded by Dubai Aviation City Corporation (DACC), which is developing the airport and implementing it through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. Completion is scheduled for December 2031, ahead of the airport's scheduled opening in 2032. The L&T statement didn’t state the exact value of the contract but the order classification ‘large” puts the value between INR 25 and 50 billion ($261-$522 million). The scope of work includes the turnkey delivery of a fully integrated APM system, encompassing design, construction, supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness of all associated infrastructure and systems. A statement from MHI said the APM system to be delivered under this contract will be the world's largest, with a length of approximately 50 km connecting nine stations. MHI and MHI-MESC, as the consortium leaders, will handle the design, procurement, and testing for the 165 APM vehicles and signaling system that constitute the core of the system, as well as the overall system integration. L&T’s statement said it will undertake the design, procurement, delivery and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems, including guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors and depot equipment. Once fully developed, Al Maktoum International Airport will become the world’s largest airport, with a capacity of 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually. The APM system will connect the airport's terminals and major facilities, meeting the travel needs of the growing number of passengers.
