# Auto Stocks Fall as Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Canadian Vehicles and Parts: GM, F, STLA

The stocks of leading U.S. automakers General Motors (GM), Ford (F) and Stellantis (STLA) are down 3% after President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian made vehicles and parts. Trump made the threat amid an escalating trade war between the neighboring countries. Specifically, the U.S. president said 50% tariffs on all cars and trucks, automotive ‌parts, and steel imports from Canada will be ‌implemented starting on Jan. 1, 2027.

The latest threat to Canada's manufacturing sector comes after trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed over the weekend. The ‌two countries failed to reach a trade deal late on Aug. 21, with each side blaming ‌the other as Canada announced plans to issue retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods starting on Sept 8. For automakers such as General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the stakes are high as they each have a sizable manufacturing presence in Canada on the other side of the border from Detroit, Michigan.

## **New U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Goods**

Following the end of trade talks on Aug. 21, the U.S. has placed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, ranging from hockey sticks to furniture and wine. The new U.S. tariffs represent 5% of the nearly $400 billion in goods that Canada sends to America each year. Analysts note that the goods hit with new U.S. import duties only comprise 0.6% of Canada's gross domestic product (GDP).

Still, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in recent days that Canada will retaliate "dollar for dollar" against the U.S. with tariffs starting next month. Canada's government in Ottawa is reportedly looking at placing tariffs on American items such as steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, and electronics. Canada's dollar is down 0.50% and trading at $0.72 against the U.S. dollar on Aug. 24.

Economists say a tit-for-tat trade war with the U.S. could be costly for Canada and could further slow the country's economic growth. Earlier this year, Canada fell into a short recession, defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.
