These Legacy Automakers Lead the EV Transition in the United States — BEV Share of…

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

CleanTechnica's Q1 and Q2 2026 US EV sales analysis reveals Fiat leading legacy brands with a surge to 98.8% EV share in Q2, followed by Cadillac at 35.4%. BMW Group tops auto groups, rising to 6.0%, while GM improved significantly to 5.0%, pushing Hyundai-Kia to third. Subaru also saw notable growth from 2.1% to 4.2%. Pure EV brands remain at the top, highlighting varying transition speeds among traditional automakers.

This is one of my favorite reports we regularly publish here at CleanTechnica. I publish quarterly EV sales reports for the United States regarding the top selling EV models and the auto brands and auto groups selling the most EVs (adding onto the various excellent reports José Pontes, Juan Diego Celemín Mojica, and Maximilian Holland regularly publish for other countries and regions). After those basic quarterly reports, though, I like diving in and finding out which automakers have the highest portion of their sales coming from EVs. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of work to get all of the necessary numbers for this, and it’s been a crazy year, so I never got to doing this for the first quarter. Well, now I have! And I’ve got the second quarter done as well. So, below, we’re going to dive into the results for both quarters and compare them.

Fiat & Cadillac Lead Brands, BMW Group Leads Auto Groups

In this first chart, I’ve decided to leave 100% EV brands on top. It shows the long-term target all brands should be moving toward, and the current best legacy brands are far enough along the curve that having the chart extend to 100% doesn’t ruin it.

Behind those pure EV brands, Fiat was in first, with 43.9% of its sales being electric, and Cadillac was in second, with 30.7% of its sales in the first quarter being electric. Volvo Cars, with 10.3% of its sales being electric, was the only other brand to be above 10% EV share. You’ve then got a second tier of auto brands that had sort of moderate EV share — Porsche (7.7%), Hyundai (6.2%), BMW (5.9%), and Lexus (5.5%). Then, well, it just gets depressing.

Looking at auto groups and alliances, BMW Group is back on top! Yep, 5.7% isn’t much to cheer about, but the German sport luxury brand is doing better than everyone else. At 4.2%, Hyundai–Kia came in second, leading all other mass-market auto companies. Then we’ve got GM at 3.6%, nothing exciting at all, but better than the rest.

Fiat, Cadillac, & BMW Group Lead Even More in 2nd Quarter

The second quarter was more of the same, but with notable rises. Fiat was still #1, but rose to 98.8% EV sales. (But note that Fiat had only 155 total sales in Q1 2026 and 82 sales in Q2 2026, so it’s questionable whether the brand should even be included here.) Cadillac was #2 again but also rose in terms of percentage — 35.4% versus 30.7%. That’s a notable increase, especially coming from a much higher starting point in terms of volumes. This time around, though, it was Porsche rather than Volvo Cars that was just above 10% share (Volvo dropped way down to 4.7% BEV share).

In terms of auto groups and alliances, BMW Group retained the #1 position and rose slightly (from 5.7% to 6.0%), and then GM shot up from third to second (from 3.6% EV share to 5.0% share). Hyundai–Kia actually had more of its sales coming from EVs than the quarter before (4.5% versus 4.2%), but GM’s big jump pushed Hyundai–Kia down to third. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, was Subaru jumping up from 2.1% EV share to 4.2% EV share — quite a jump!
