Bitcoin Fed Meeting Preview: Could One Decision Pump BTC?

LongbridgeAII'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Bitcoin could rally above $82,000 if the Federal Reserve surprises markets by holding rates steady, contrary to the expected 25-basis-point hike. Analysts suggest a surprise hold might trigger a risk-asset rally, while JPMorgan warns such an outcome could hurt stocks. The press conference's tone is considered more critical than the rate decision itself for crypto markets.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has gained after only two of the past 14 Fed decisions, yet one analyst argues a surprise today could make it three.

What the Consensus Expects

As Benzinga reported Wednesday, Polymarket traders price a 25-basis-point hike at 89% with roughly $193 million traded on the decision.

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) mapped out five scenarios for what happens next, with a surprise hold seen as the most painful outcome for stocks, potentially sending the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:SPY) down 1.25% to 1.75%.

What Warsh says at the 2:30 p.m. ET press conference matters more than the hike itself, according to the bank.

ScenarioS&P 500 Move
Hike + signal unwinding 2025 cuts+0.5% to +1%
Hike + little guidance+0.25% to +0.75%
Hike + higher for longer signal-0.25% to -1%
No hike-1.25% to -1.75%
Hike + material further tightening needed-1% to -2%

Why the Press Conference Could Backfire

Macro analyst Robin Brooks wrote in a Substack post Wednesday that Warsh faces an impossible task.

Markets price not just today’s hike but another 25 basis points by December and two more in 2027. Since Warsh has a well-known aversion to forward guidance, the press conference will almost certainly sound dovish relative to what markets want.

Brooks’ base case lands in the “dovish hike” bucket, triggering curve steepening, a weaker dollar, and gold moving higher. He called it the same trap Warsh fell into at the July meeting.

The Contrarian Bitcoin Case

On-chain analyst Ali Martinez posted a thread on X Wednesday, arguing that if Warsh surprises with a hold, the shock could trigger a powerful rally across risk assets.

Bitcoin has gained after only two of the past 14 FOMC decisions, and a no-hike outcome could push it from $75,000 back above $82,000 as investors rapidly reposition.

Ali Martinez framed it as a political calculation: Trump needs a win before the midterms, and another rate hike adds economic pressure heading into November.

The contrarian case sits against 89% market odds and the CLARITY Act’s failure Tuesday, which removed one of Bitcoin’s two main near-term catalysts.

What Warsh says after the hike, rather than the hike itself, looks like the key variable for crypto markets heading into Wednesday afternoon.
