Against the backdrop of a significant rebound in the tourism industry in the post-epidemic era, Airbus has secured the largest commercial jet order in civil aviation history.
On Monday local time, Airbus signed an order for 500 Airbus A320neo narrow-body jets with IndiGo, India's largest airline. The deal was announced by executives from both companies at the Paris Air Show that day.
In terms of quantity, the deal broke the purchasing record of 470 planes set by competitor Air India in February this year, making it the largest commercial jet order in the history of global civil aviation.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said, &#34;No one has ever placed such a large order.&#34;
The executives of the two companies did not disclose the details of the transaction. According to the Wall Street Journal's estimate, if the customary discount of more than 50% is not taken into account and the recent list price is used, the value of this order will reach $50 billion.
Established in 2006, IndiGo is the largest domestic passenger carrier in India, with a market share of 56.8% in March. With the order signed on Monday, IndiGo now has 1,330 Airbus planes. It is reported that the order will be delivered from 2030 to 2035.
Increased revenue and economic recovery in the post-epidemic era have brought hope to the Indian aviation industry, and passenger traffic has now returned to pre-epidemic levels. Official data shows that the number of passengers in the first three months of this year increased by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2019, reaching 37.5 million.
Airbus said last week that it expects Asia to be the fastest-growing market in the world, led by China and India. The company predicts that by 2042, the global fleet will more than double from 22,880 planes at the beginning of 2020 to 46,560.
Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer said the agreement &#34;symbolizes the enormous potential represented by the Indian market.&#34;
Airbus also confirmed on Monday that Saudi Arabian airline Flynas has confirmed an order for 30 A320neo series planes.
