According to Zhītōng Finance, Hollywood film companies and striking actors have agreed to resume contract negotiations in an effort to end the labor dispute that began in July. In a joint statement, all parties announced that talks will resume on October 2nd, with several executives from the film companies in attendance. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), representing approximately 160,000 actors, is seeking increased base wages and residual compensation for streaming services. These members also hope to prevent unauthorized use of their images by artificial intelligence.
On September 24th, the Writers Guild of America reached a preliminary agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture &amp; Television Producers to end the strike that began in May. The Alliance represents film and television producers, including companies like Disney and Netflix. In June of this year, the Directors Guild of America reached its own agreement with the film companies.
As the entertainment industry shifts from broadcast television, cable TV, and movie theaters to streaming platforms, industry associations and their employers have been negotiating new compensation terms. The dual strikes by writers and actors have resulted in the suspension of hundreds of film and television projects, and forced television networks to rearrange their fall programming. The release dates of major Hollywood films have also been postponed. Observers estimate that the economic losses caused by the strikes range from $5 billion to $7 billion.
