The Ministry of Ecology and Environment recently released guidelines for the public opening of environmental protection facilities in four industries: petrochemicals, electricity, steel, and building materials. The guidelines encourage these industries to open to the public through offline visits or virtual tours. Pei Xiaofei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, introduced that since 2017, the ministry has worked with relevant departments to promote the public opening of four types of environmental protection facilities, namely "the old four types of environmental protection facilities," including ecological environment monitoring, urban sewage treatment, urban household waste treatment, and hazardous waste and discarded electrical and electronic products treatment, achieving good results. As of now, 2,101 enterprises have become open units for environmental protection facilities, receiving a total of 220 million visitors. Building on the existing work, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has now expanded the list of open units to include the petrochemical, electricity, steel, and building materials industries. These four industries are important foundational and pillar industries for economic and social development, and they also consume a lot of energy and produce significant pollution, making them key targets for ecological environment governance. Pei Xiaofei stated that the release of the new guidelines for the public opening of the four types of environmental protection facilities will further ensure the public's right to know, participate, and supervise in ecological environment matters, stimulate public enthusiasm and initiative in protecting the ecological environment, and promote the healthy and orderly development of related industries
