Disney Considers Free Tier of Disney+, Disney Stock (NYSE:DIS) Slips
I'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.Disney is considering launching a free tier for Disney+ to attract price-sensitive consumers, a move that caused its stock to slip slightly. Meanwhile, FuboTV replaced CEO David Gandler with Alisa Bowen, formerly president of Disney+. Despite recent share price declines, Wall Street analysts maintain a 'Strong Buy' consensus on Disney stock, citing an average price target of $133.75.
The recent move from Fox (FOXA) to buy Roku (ROKU) left a potentially huge shake-up in the entertainment world. Entertainment giant Disney (DIS) may well have derived an idea or two from that move, and is currently considering an unexpected move: offering something for free. That move left Disney shareholders shaken as well, and shares dropped fractionally in Friday afternoon's trading.

The plan is to take at least some of Disney's content and make it available to viewers at no charge. This is a huge pivot coming from a company that tries to sell bottles of water for around $4 each. There is no timeline on this project yet, nor is there any word about just what content will be made available. But the idea remains, as Disney considers the landscape and realizes a lot of customers are price-sensitive these days.
Such a move would help Disney stand out. It is not as though Disney does not have a lot of content that it used to offer up at no charge, like everything that hit the Disney Afternoon bloc, or anything aired during the Wonderful World of Disney. Throw in the fact that Disney is aggressively pursuing new format options like short-form content and that opens up a new bloc of material that could be sacrificed for the sake of eyeballs.
Shift at the Top
FuboTV (FUBO) recently lost its CEO, as David Gandler was removed and replaced with Disney's own Alisa Bowen. Bowen recently served as president of Disney+, where she has been since September 2022. Given that Gandler was a co-founder of Fubo, the move to replace him is a pretty big move indeed. But since Gandler resigned from his position on the board, and his nomination for re-election was withdrawn, it seems either Gandler wanted out or someone else wanted him out permanently.
Chairman of the board Andy Bird noted, "Alisa is a proven operator who brings nearly 30 years of product, digital and operational experience, including leadership across Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+."
