Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) suffered its steepest single-day decline since 1974, sliding to approximately $65 per share Friday, raising fresh questions about the chipmaker’s turnaround.

Seaport analyst Jay Goldberg advised investors to remain on the sidelines, saying the company "clearly has planning and capacity issues, which they need to grapple with." He added, "Until they do, it’s kind of dead money. I think it trades flat for a while," according to CNBC.

Goldberg said Intel manufactured too many PC chips during a severe downturn while producing too few server chips to meet strong demand. He blamed "bad planning assumptions" and difficulty securing "all the components they needed."

The analyst, however, said that Intel could be "in good shape" after resolving its capacity problems.

PC Weakness and Capacity Risks Cloud Outlook

Intel beat third-quarter earnings and revenue estimates. However, its fourth-quarter outlook fell short, with projected EPS of 25 cents and revenue of $15 billion-$16 billion below analyst expectations. John Pitzer, Intel’s corporate vice president of investor relations, said that the PC slowdown arrived "sooner and deeper" than the company expected, adding that rising memory prices were weighing particularly heavily on laptop demand.

Intel is seeing stronger data-center CPU demand driven by agentic AI, but continued weakness in the PC market could limit its near-term recovery, eMarketer senior analyst Asa Hiken said.

The company’s long-term growth prospects depend heavily on its foundry business and advanced chip-packaging technology. However, Intel must secure substantial customer commitments to justify its massive manufacturing investments and convince investors that its foundry ambitions are commercially viable, the analyst said.

However, Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman said Intel’s weak guidance reflects capacity expansion challenges and product mix rather than slowing demand. Strategist Shay Boloor warned that production constraints could push server CPU customers toward rivals Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA), potentially costing Intel market share.
