BMW of North America is recalling about 318,000 vehicles across multiple BMW models and the Toyota Supra due to a potential defect that may make the engine starter overheat and cause a fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall covers select 2021-2026 BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4 and Z4 models, as well as 2023-2024 Toyota Supra vehicles built by BMW. In total, 318,495 cars are being recalled.
Wear on the starter motor component can lead to overheating and increase the risk of a vehicle fire, the regulator said.
Dealers will replace the starter free of charge, and owner notifications are scheduled to be mailed in late August.
The action expands an earlier recall issued this year, the NHTSA said.
