$GlobalFoundries(GFS.US) just locked in up to $21 billion for two new chip fabs in New York

Japan is putting up the capital under its $550 billion US investment pledge, with GlobalFoundries selected to operate both plants at its Malta site

About $10 billion initially accelerates a new 300mm fab expected online in 2029, and another about $10 billion would fund a second fab

Each fab is expected to add about 900,000 wafers of annual US capacity when fully ramped. The project is pegged at about 27,000 construction jobs and more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs

Separately, the US Commerce Department will take about a 4% equity stake in $GlobalFoundries(GFS.US), and GF is reallocating $955 million of its existing CHIPS Act award into silicon photonics, silicon-germanium, and advanced packaging at Malta and Burlington

$Apple(AAPL.US), Renesas, Cirrus Logic, and GM are already named as customers leaning on this capacity

This is foundational silicon for autos, industrial, and infrastructure, not leading-edge AI GPUs. Japan writing the check while Commerce takes equity still marks $GlobalFoundries(GFS.US) as the specialty foundry Washington wants onshore, and the stock will trade that credibility premium as the first fab breaks ground later this year.
