# BOE, Hybrid OLED, ultra-thin and lightweight!

The BOE A's OLED Gen 8.6 line officially began mass production on June 17.

In the initial stage of mass production, it is equivalent to the inventory preparation period for downstream brand manufacturers, so there isn't much activity visible yet. However, now, gradually, some products will start to emerge.

Previously, Omdia provided a technical comparison between rigid OLED, hybrid OLED (Hybrid OLED), and flexible OLED, as follows:

From the perspective of being lightweight and thin:

Rigid OLED: thickness 1.2mm1.5mm, weight 155g210g;

Hybrid OLED: thickness approx. 0.7mm, weight approx. 99g;

Flexible OLED: thickness approx. 0.5mm, weight below 85g.

This means that notebook computer products adopting hybrid OLED (Hybrid OLED) or flexible OLED will see a significant improvement in their lightweight and thin attributes.

Ultimate lightness and thinness are strong 加分 items (plus points).

At the same time, if layered with dual-layer OLED technology, hybrid OLED and flexible OLED have more advantages in terms of brightness, power consumption performance, and color gamut coverage.

So, next, we can pay attention to some new product launch events.

Briefly discussing some common questions regarding the Chengdu B16 OLED Gen 8.6 line.

1\. Mass production does not equal the start of depreciation

I have explained this many times, but judging from the comments, some people still mistakenly believe that "mass production means starting depreciation," but that is not the case. Generally speaking, a newly built production line will only be transferred to fixed assets once it reaches the "prescribed usable state," and depreciation begins the month after this transfer. The core point lies in whether the "prescribed usable state" has been reached, which is different from mass production.

Then, this creates a special time window: mass production has already started, but there are only cash costs, no depreciation, and no interest expenses. In the OLED industry, such time windows exist and can last for several years.

Therefore, at this current stage, not only do we not need to worry about depreciation, but there is also potential for profit.

2\. In the NB-OLED field, the OLED Gen 8.6 line has a cost advantage

Currently, there are only two OLED Gen 8.6 lines in the world that have begun mass production: one by BOE A and one by Samsung Display. Samsung Display mainly produces OLED panels for Apple's MacBook Pro; BOE A mainly produces for other brands, including Huawei. This is equivalent to BOE A and Samsung Display each taking a share of the cake, and then using their respective Gen 8.6 lines to crush other lower-generation lines.

The OLED Gen 8.6 line also has a clear cost advantage when producing NB-OLED. For example, if NB-OLED products are priced down to the cash cost of OLED Gen 6 lines, the OLED Gen 8.6 line might still make a profit.

Lower cost, better performance, the market for NB-OLED belongs to the OLED Gen 8.6 line.

3\. If depreciation starts in 2027, will Chengdu B16 definitely incur losses?

Not necessarily. Normal business logic dictates that even during the depreciation phase, there should be profits. BOE A's LCD production lines have made profits during their depreciation periods, sometimes even quite substantial ones.

So, why does everyone naturally think of losses when mentioning depreciation now?

Because domestic flexible OLED Gen 6 lines, once they start depreciating, almost universally incur losses, sometimes huge ones. Why is this? Obviously, overcapacity and low-price competition.

If you still can't figure it out, let me ask you another question: When Xiaomi flagships used Samsung screens back then, did Samsung Display lose money? Think about it.

It's not the fault of downstream brand manufacturers; it's a problem inherent to the OLED industry: overcapacity and low-price competition.

So, we must fight the OLED elimination round and produce results!

Taking a step back, looking at the OLED Gen 8.6 line again, its main product is IT-OLED. With limited initial capacity and limited competitive intensity, it is possible to make a profit after depreciation starts in 2027. But looking further ahead, as other OLED Gen 8.6 lines join the fray, that may no longer be the case.

Therefore, it would be best if the OLED elimination round could yield results at this current stage. If BOE takes the lead in completing the capacity integration of the OLED industry sooner, life will be easier in the future. Regardless, BOE has already pulled ahead by more than a year, so let's fully utilize this time gap, secure the first-mover advantage, and go for it!
