# Full-time US stock trader sharing + individual stock commentary 🔥

Last night's @Investing from Zero (Andy) US stock market live stream covered the broader market and individual stocks, sharing some risk management tips. The editor has compiled the following notes for everyone to learn together 📝:

**1) How to view the index breaking out while individual stocks lag? 📊**
The S&P 500 tested key resistance levels three or four times between June and August before finally breaking through. In between, it repeatedly bounced off the EMA50. After the recent breakout, the market hasn't moved as smoothly as it did from April to June; many stocks rally slightly only to pull back. **Thus, an index breakout and individual stock strength are actually two different things!**

He also noted that during favorable market conditions, over a hundred stocks could meet his criteria and hit all-time highs, but on the day of the live stream, only 27 did. **In terms of deployment, he isn't overly bearish on the market, nor very optimistic. Currently, he is shifting from defense to a semi-offensive stance.**

**2) Why has the broader market corrected recently? 📉**
China, the UK, and Japan all reduced their holdings of US Treasuries in June. A primary reason for the recent correction is that **the yield on 30-year US Treasuries rose to 5.31%, hitting a 19-year high.** With long-term bonds offering a 5.31% annual return with zero effort, while stocks require bearing volatility for potential returns, capital naturally flows toward bonds. However, Andy's view is that **as long as yields don't spike overnight, the actual impact remains limited.**

**3) Besides tech stocks, which other sectors are worth watching? 🌟**
Currently, besides tech, **old economy sectors like banks are worth attention.** As long-term rates rise while short-term rates remain stable, the interest cost for bank deposits stays unchanged. However, yields on new investments, such as government and real estate bonds, rise with long-term rates, widening the spread and boosting profits. $Bank of America(BAC.US) is an example of a bank stock moving up along the EMA20.

In the same theme, Japanese stocks include $Mitsubishi UFJ Financial(MUFG.US), which is also trending up along the EMA20 technically, driven by BOJ rate hikes. Japanese banks have been lending at near-zero costs; with BOJ hikes, the profit margin on lent funds increases.

**4) To win, you don't need a high win rate 💡**
If the risk-reward ratio is 1:2, a 40% win rate still makes money; if it's 1:3, even a 30% win rate works. **So, he determines the potential loss and gain for each trade before entering.** During earnings seasons, he checks the expected daily volatility. If a stock is expected to move 6% but he lacks a 6% paper buffer, he won't hold through earnings. This isn't about being bullish or bearish; **it's purely a risk management action.**

**Key Stock Reviews 🔍**
$Sandisk(SNDK.US): Entered April 1, held along EMA20, sold out in three tranches after breaking down, now positionless. Recent rebound catalysts stem from market speculation that Apple won't stop sourcing memory from China just due to US government pressure, opting instead for higher-cost US goods. This shows memory demand hasn't peaked, lifting the sector. Andy says exiting isn't because he expects a drop or rise, but because the stock's daily volatility is too high and it's too far from the EMA20, so it's currently on the watchlist only.

$Teradyne(TER.US): On Aug 4, the same day S&P broke out, entered at $397.4, with a stop-loss around 7-8%, targeting historical highs of $488-$490, offering roughly a 1:3 payout. Fundamentally, semiconductor testing accounts for ~84% of TER's revenue, while robotics is only ~7.5%, but the latter commands a higher valuation.

Risks to note: First, QoQ growth was only 3.6% overall and 1% in semiconductors, lower than last quarter's double digits—if the market sees this as a slowdown sign, capital may not push prices higher.

Second, business concentration risks; if AI capex slows, revenue impact would be significant. However, the stock saw a small rebound post-earnings, so we need to observe if these levels hold.

**Audience Questions 🙋**
$Marvell Tech(MRVL.US): Entered around $212, 1:2.5 payout, support at previous lows of $163-$165, target $330. On the live stream day, a false breakout occurred followed by a drop into consolidation, first target $230, downside $200-$210.

$Alphabet - C(GOOG.US): Cash flow turned negative for the first time after July 23 earnings, leading to immediate selling. The market later corrected its view, realizing funds were invested in AI R&D, allowing the stock to recover. However, a gap remained post-earnings; the stock faced resistance three times around $375, and the EMA20 is losing effectiveness. Watch if the gap start at ~$340 holds.

Finally, Andy reminded everyone that any key level is just a level; reaching it doesn't mean you must exit, and breaking it doesn't mean game over. **Trade what you see, not what you think. Execute discipline, and avoid blindly copying trades 🫰**!
