description: "Hyundai has conducted a teardown analysis of Tesla's Cybertruck at its Namyang Research Center to understand its features better as the automaker aims to enter the U.S. electric pickup truck market. The study, completed on July 28, 2024, supports Hyundai's plans to develop an electric truck that meets a range of over 500 km (310 miles) and can tow 4,000 kg (8,800 lbs), with annual production targets exceeding 50,000 units for both Hyundai and Kia starting in 2028. This comes as the Cybertruck remains popular in the market despite mixed reviews."

# Tesla Cybertruck torn down by Hyundai for analysis: report

The Tesla Cybertruck might be the de facto punching bag of the online car community today, but the polarizing all-electric pickup truck is getting some attention from experienced automakers. These include South Korean automaker Hyundai, which reportedly conducted a teardown analysis of a Tesla Cybertruck.

Reports about Hyundai’s reported Tesla Cybertruck teardown were shared in _Naver News_. Citing industry sources, the publication noted that Hyundai Motor Group’s Namyang Research Center started tearing down a Tesla Cybertruck for analysis late last month. This study was reportedly completed on July 28, 2024.

It remains to be seen why Hyundai reportedly studied the Cybertruck, though reports have suggested that the South Korean automaker has plans to make waves in the United States’ electric pickup truck market in the coming years. To enable this, Hyundai is reportedly looking to develop an all-electric pickup truck that would be released for both Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors.

Hyundai is reportedly aiming for a driving range of over 500 km (310 miles) while pulling a heavy load of 4,000 kg (8,800 lbs) for its upcoming all-electric pickup truck. Plans are reportedly underway to produce over 50,000 units per year of the vehicle for Hyundai Motor Company in 2029, and more than 50,000 units per year of the vehicle for Kia Motors starting 2028.

The Tesla Cybertruck is an interesting reference point for Hyundai, though the vehicle is quite unique in its segment due to innovations such as its 48V architecture and steer-by-wire system. Despite its polarizing nature, the Cybertruck is also selling well, with Kelley Blue Book recently noting that the all-electric pickup truck was the US’ best-selling vehicle priced over $100,000 in July 2024.

North America’s pickup truck segment is a huge market, with the vehicles selling between 2.8 to 3 million units per year, over twice the number of sedans that are sold in the region. So far, the three best-selling pickup trucks in the United States are the Ford F-Series, the Chevrolet Silverado, and the Dodge Ram. Marklines estimated that the three models alone sold over 1.7 million units last year, more than the combined annual sales of Hyundai and Kia in the United States.
