# Global mining giant Rio Tinto is reported to be discussing a merger with commodity trading giant Glencore

According to a report by Bloomberg, Rio Tinto, the world's second-largest mining group, is in preliminary discussions about a merger with commodity trader Glencore. If the two merge, it would be the largest merger in industry history, with a combined market value of approximately $158 billion, surpassing industry leader BHP's $126 billion.

Reuters reported that Glencore approached Rio Tinto last year, but the negotiations were brief and did not continue. This is not the first time the two have considered a merger; Rio Tinto rejected Glencore's acquisition proposal in 2014.

The mining industry has recently accelerated consolidation to secure the supply of metals needed for the transition to electric vehicles and clean energy. Last year, Rio Tinto acquired American lithium producer Arcadium (ALTM.US) for $6.7 billion
