# UK Regulator OKs New Pneumonia, Meningitis Vaccine

Merck Sharp & Dohme (UK)'s Capvaxive secured marketing authorization from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency as a vaccine against illnesses caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae or pneumococcus.

The vaccine, approved through the international recognition procedure, protects individuals aged 18 years and older against illnesses like pneumonia, meningitis and bacteraemia, according to a Thursday release.

The agency noted it will keep the vaccine's safety and effectiveness under review.
