# Alibaba surged, but short interest indicators had already begun to soar

Alibaba's stock price surged, but prior to this, bets against it had already skyrocketed.

The latest available data from S&P Global shows that the short interest in Alibaba ADR soared to 161 million shares on September 22, reaching 4.7 times the previous trading day.

On September 23, it continued to rise to 163 million shares, setting a record high since January 2019. On that day, the shorted shares accounted for 6.86% of its total shares, significantly higher than the 1.44% on September 19.

S3 data indicates that the short interest in Alibaba ADR rose to 41.85 million shares on September 24, up from 41.18 million the previous day, reaching the highest level since April.

The shorted shares accounted for 1.76% of the float, compared to 1.70% on September 19
