# Malaysia negotiates zero tariffs on chips and mineral agreements with Trump

As Malaysia prepares to reach a trade agreement with the United States on Sunday, the country is seeking to exclude chips from President Trump's tariffs.

"The current tariff is zero, and I hope to maintain this status," Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Zafrul Aziz said in an interview on Saturday.

Malaysia is facing a 19% tariff imposed by Trump, who is also considering imposing tariffs of up to 300% on semiconductors, raising concerns for the world's sixth-largest chip exporter. The United States is Malaysia's third-largest semiconductor export market.

Zafrul also hinted that Malaysia might reach a key mineral agreement with the United States when Trump arrives in Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN annual summit. When asked if Malaysia would sign such an agreement with Trump on Sunday, Zafrul stated, "It is possible."
