# Ignoring market concerns, Google splurges $40 billion to boost AI infrastructure in Texas

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Google (GOOGL.US) announced on Friday plans to invest $40 billion in three new data centers in Texas, aimed at enhancing the state's artificial intelligence (AI) computing power. Currently, Texas has attracted billions of dollars in investments from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic PBC.

Google stated in a press release that the related investments will be completed by 2027. One of the data centers will be located in Armstrong County in the northern plains of Texas, while the other two will be in Haskell County near the city of Abilene in West Texas. One of the data centers in Haskell County will be paired with a newly built solar and battery storage power station to alleviate the impact on the power grid.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated at an event near Dallas, "This investment will create thousands of jobs in Texas, provide skills training for college students and electrical apprentices, and accelerate the state's energy inclusivity programs." Google currently operates two data centers in Dallas.

With relatively low energy prices, vast land resources, and strong government support for AI infrastructure development, Texas is becoming a popular location for data center construction. In announcing the latest plans, Google emphasized its commitment to "introducing new energy sources to the power grid, bearing operational costs, and supporting community energy efficiency enhancement programs."

The company also announced that, through funding from Google.org's AI Opportunities Fund, an electrical training program will significantly expand the scale of electrical apprentices in Texas.

"Texas will become the core hub for Google's AI data centers," Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at the event alongside Pichai, "Businesses come here to operate, knowing that Texas always moves forward at the speed of business development."

Boosted by this news, Google's stock price rose over 4% in after-hours trading on Friday.

**Competition in Texas**

Texas is also attracting investment commitments from other companies. Earlier this week, Anthropic announced plans to invest $50 billion in data centers across the U.S. (including New York and Texas), with Texas's ample land reserves and relatively low energy costs being key advantages.

The "Stargate" project, supported by ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Oracle (ORCL.US), and SoftBank Group (SFTBY.US), is building its first data center in Abilene, Texas, with executives revealing plans for more projects in the state.

Meta Platforms (META.US) is also constructing a new gigawatt-level data center in Texas. For reference, 1 gigawatt of power can meet the simultaneous electricity needs of 750,000 households. Earlier this month, Microsoft (MSFT.US) signed a nearly $10 billion agreement to secure computing capacity in Texas for the next five years.

Fermi Inc. (FRMI.US), a real estate investment trust co-founded by former Texas Governor Rick Perry (who served as Energy Secretary during Trump's first term), plans to build four nuclear reactors in Texas exclusively for private data center parks **Concerns Behind the Investment Frenzy**

However, as data centers rapidly expand in Texas and across the United States, investors are beginning to worry: the large-scale spending plans may far exceed the revenue growth that companies can achieve through AI services.

Indeed, multi-billion dollar investment commitments are not uncommon for Google. The company expects its capital expenditures to exceed $90 billion this year, a significant increase from previous estimates, with most of the funds allocated for servers, custom chips, and new data center construction to support its AI and cloud computing businesses.

In just the past two months, Google has announced several major investments: plans to invest $15 billion in building an AI infrastructure hub in southern India; a commitment to invest $6.4 billion in computing resources and operational projects in Germany; and over $6.5 billion to boost the local AI industry in the UK.

This investment spree not only highlights Google's ambition to surpass its traditional search advertising business and achieve global expansion but also poses a severe test of its ability to quickly convert the heavily built AI infrastructure into the returns that investors expect
