# Apple is reportedly accelerating its succession plan: Cook may retire as early as next year

Beijing time, November 15th, news at noon, Apple Inc. is accelerating the development of a succession plan in preparation for Tim Cook's potential resignation as CEO as early as next year.

Several people familiar with the discussions revealed that Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, is widely regarded as Cook's most likely successor.

Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Sources close to Apple revealed that the succession plan is not due to performance reasons, as the sales performance of the iPhone 17 series is expected to be very impressive.

If the successor is announced early next year, the new leadership team will have time to establish themselves before Apple's important annual events, including the developer conference (WWDC) in June and the iPhone launch event in September
