# Materials Up as Deal Activity Offsets Fed Fears -- Materials Roundup

Producers of metals and other raw materials rose slightly as concerns about the Federal Reserve's plans for its December meeting offset deal activity.

Both sides of the Federal Reserve's dual mandate are under pressure, Richmond Federal President Thomas Barkin said, and central bankers will scrutinize data due on both inflation and growth in coming weeks to guide them out of the fog created by a recent federal shutdown.

Paintmakers AkzoNobel and Axalta Coating Systems said they reached an agreement for an all-stock merger that is set to create a global paint giant with a combined market value of some $17 billion, dusting off a deal they discussed back in 2017.

Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly vowed to decide next month on whether Anglo American can proceed with its takeover of Teck Resources, but warned that the British miner's pledges to date were not enough.

The SPDR Select Sector Materials exchange-traded fund rose slightly Tuesday, but has lost more than 3.5% in the last month.
